October 6, 2008 - 87 Cats at Risk PTS- Many Sponsored like Harley Need Rescues or Adopters Grayson Humane Society KY
http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=11505379As stated below: "One of the shelter volunteers actually has the next week off from work, so she's VERY SADLY contemplating which cats she'll need to schedule to take to the vet's office for their 'final' visit....."
UPDATE, October 5th, 2008: Exactly one month after we mailed out our desperate plea for help for the 80+ Grayson County Humane Society cats and kittens that were facing possible euthanasia, we find ourselves in the same horrific situation (if not worse), but with a different "community" of cats. While a blessed 23 cats/kittens went out on a life-saving transport after our September 5th plea, another 30 cats/kittens have come in since then, three of which have died (they were too-tiny kittens left at the gate after hours - soaking wet in the chilly night air), and eight of which aren't even listed yet on the Petfinder website.
This means the situation is even more dire than before. As one of the shelter volunteers so clearly summarized the grim scenario, "THERE IS NO MORE ROOM AT THE INN, NO MATTER HOW GRACIOUS THE INNKEEPER IS." The "extras" literally continue to spill out into the hallway, office, and even the bathroom.
Fifteen of the cats shown on the Grayson County Humane Society Petfinder website are already sponsored (which means they're free to an approved rescue group) and many of those have already been vetted. Low-cost vetting is available for any of the other cats/kittens and out-of-state adoptions are allowed. As always, transport to the northeast or towards the Chicago area can often be arranged.
PLEASE - if you see any cat or kitten that you'd be interested in rescuing or adopting, contact the Grayson County Humane Society ASAP!!! Having recently spent a week there volunteering (I actually live in upstate New York), I'm happy to answer any questions about the many cats and kittens that I was fortunate enough to meet while I was there. While the main shelter contacts can provide more in-depth information (they can be reached at dwhite@aggressiveonline.net - @aggressiveonline.net - or bethany@mail2cook.com - @mail2cook.com), feel free to also send me an email at schwender@aol.com (@aol.com) with any questions you might have.
Time has once again nearly run out for a number of these precious furpurrs. One of the shelter volunteers actually has the next week off from work, so she's VERY SADLY contemplating which cats she'll need to schedule to take to the vet's office for their "final" visit. I'm sorry to be so "graphic," but such is the current reality of the overcrowded Grayson County Humane Society. Please help if you can.........

Some of the Grayson cats are sponsored, which means they're vetted and "free" to an approved rescue group. If you see a Grayson cat that you'd be interested in rescuing, but that isn't yet sponsored, please feel free to let Donna White, a volunteer at the shelter ( dwhite@aggressiveonline.net - @aggressiveonline.net) or myself ( schwender@aol.com - @aol.com) know and we'll certainly see what we can do to get some of the Grayson supporters to sponsor the cat/kitten you're inquiring about. We'd love to help great rescues be able to save a Grayson cat every once in a while.
If you can rescue or adopt any of these fabulous felines or if you have questions about any of the cats that are listed, please contact the shelter volunteers at dwhite@aggressiveonline.net (@aggressiveonline.net) or call 270-230-8839. If you don't have room in your rescue group or loving home for a cat, but if you know of someone who does, please - PRETTY KITTY PLEASE - forward this message on to them ASAP.
Please don't let distance prevent you from rescuing or adopting any of the Grayson cats (or dogs). The Grayson County Humane Society has an incredibly dedicated group of volunteers who not only donate their time and energy to transport these furry angels, but whom also pay for such life-saving journeys out of their own pocket (although a donation towards gas is always appreciated).
All animals adopted from Grayson will be altered before placement and will receive their shots and a worming. Out-of-state adoptions are allowed.
Whatever kind of help that you can provide to this wonderful group of volunteers that are working SO VERY HARD to improve things for the pets in their county and in their care is VERY much appreciated -- by them, as well as the many cats and dogs in such need.
We realize that we can't save them all, nor do we expect you to save every one of them. We simply thank each and every one of you for ALL that you do for the furry angels of this world and we look forward to possibly working with you in the future.
Sincerely,
Donna Schwender
