This is a Crosspost I received as an e-mail

"FURTHER DOWN IS THE ORIGINAL E-MAIL I SENT OUT MAY 6TH.  THE SITUATION HAS BECOME EVEN MORE DIRE...  THE PLACE IS NOW RUNNING OUT OF FOOD!!!  PLEASE SEE THE E-MAIL BELOW FROM A LOCAL RESCUE:

"Petra,  I've been working on the screven dogs/puppies and we have pulled out more than 50 BUT they have NO FOOD and if they do not get help with food then they will not hold any dogs.  If people would even send them a giftcard for Walmart marked for dog food it would give us time to get them out.  I have 8 flying to Canada next Wednesday if I can get them to hold them long enough to get them out.  I have transport arranged...still need a few crates but its coming together.  Can you post for food for Screven?  I'm not good at it and do not like computers.  They only had one bag of food when I was there the other day...its a bad situation."

THE CONTACT FOR THIS FACILITY IS:
905 rocky ford road
Sylvania, GA 30467
They can talk to anyone there about dog food donations.  Thanks, just trying to keep them alive long enough to get them homes!

ONCE AGAIN, HERE IS THE LINK TO THE PICTURES - PLEASE BE PREPARED THAT SOME OF THESE DOGS/CATS ARE NO LONGER ALIVE:

The director for the Screven County Animal Control shelter in Sylvania, GA, had a heart attack and the shelter is under temporary management and is short staffed currently.  Their hours of operation have been cut short and adoptions have dropped.  Hardly any rescues pull from here.  A local veterinarian was called in to euthanize many, but he called GARD instead to see if the rescue community could help first.  GARD pulled 34 dogs on 4/28/11. If you can take some of these dogs, GARD will pull them for you and transport them to the Northeastern US for free.  The vet will do rabies shots and health certificates for free.  The link below shows pictures of the dogs from 4/28/11.  Please respond to this email with the number for the dog(s) you are interested in and we will make arrangements for transport.  THIS IS URGENT THAT WE ACT QUICKLY NOW.

This is a VERY urgent situation.  We have given all puppies first vaccines and are quarantining them now.  Adults can be killed anytime.  We have a great vet working with us.  This shelter is only open a couple of hours each week and so getting in to these animals is very difficult. We are meeting with the Commissioners to ask them to change hours and work with rescues.  This is a very rural area and they have a 98% kill rate. We can help pull and transport and arrange vetting for any of these animals.  Please crosspost!!!!   We do not have much time.
We did pull the mother that day with the prolasped uterus and our vet did an emergency c section on her.  She and puppies are doing great but it was touch and go for awhile with mom.  She is at a loving foster home and is recovering.

I e-mailed the city and was told that the city does not have an animal shelter

I received an e-mail from a reader who wrote

"I e-mailed the city and was told that the city does not have an animal shelter."

Please read this post again. It is from a rescue that has taken animals from the Animal Control in the town. Perhaps the confusion is seeing the word shelter.

Here is the link to animal control. The best thing to do when you see a post like this is contact the contacts.

This is the listing. Even though the heading reads Animal Control , the word shelter is used.
It makes sense if you ask the city if they have a shelter the person would say no. BUT they do have animal control.

To further clarify from the e-mail

"The director for the Screven County Animal Control shelter in Sylvania, GA, had a heart attack and the shelter is under temporary management and is short staffed currently."

The words animal control and shelter are in the same sentence here. I am crossposting this e-mail so once again contact the contacts in the e-mail or call the city again and ask them if they have animal control and if it is under temporary management.

Might I inject a little more information into this discussion, as a member of an animal rescue group actually BASED IN Screven County, and one which regularly pulls from the shelter being accused? First: the City does not, in fact, have a shelter. The only shelters in the county are the Screven County Animal Shelter, which the city has no control over as it is a county facility, and the Friends of Screven County Animals Haven, which is a non-profit, no-kill shelter (which, if you were wondering, has plenty of food as well... although we're always happy to accept donations ;) ) While the kill rate is unfortunately high, the allegations of animals starving and living in squalor is false, and the shelter has been working with local animal rescue groups to help get animals adopted out. These stories have been investigated, they are proven NOT TRUE and our local TV station has video footage which shows exactly what the conditions are in our brand new county shelter. http://www.wtoc.com/global/story.asp?s=14700417 And no, they didn't just do a quick cleanup & resupply - if you go to Petfinder.com, you will see every animal in the shelter is listed there. That listing is done by OUR volunteers, who are not associated with the county, and they were the first to defend the County Shelter when this story came out.

Thanks,Sharon. Glad you posted the information.

If people want to adopt animals from the shelter and don't live in the area can your group help ?

We'd love to help! Our website is www.friendsofscrevencountyanimals.org or you can get in touch with us through Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_104686334327 - we've been around for two years, and we've been working with other groups as well as the shelter administration to get as many animals as possible out so that the animal control officer won't have to put them down when the shelter gets too full. Our problem has always been too many animals, not enough adopters, so pulling an animal who's got a home to go to already is fine with us!

The only thing that examiner has going for her is the fact that government entities cannot sue for libel. And that examiner article can be considered libel.

The only recourse is for many to write examiner.com in protest of the article that was based on rumor with no fact checking. It could be removed. It was sloppy.

Sorry this had to happen. It looks like a good rescue and an honest shelter trying to do the right thing is now suffering for it.
