My name is Gabby and I am a beautiful two year old
American Staffordshire Terrier with a stunning cinnamon coat
and a precious face matched by my sweet personality.
I am a current resident of Williamson County Animal
Control but I need a forever home. I have been down on my luck
and if I could tell you my story it might break your heart but
despite my hardships, I am very trusting and affectionate.
The volunteers who love me tell me they are looking for my
 guardian angel.
They say I need someone to watch over me to make sure
 I only have
to worry about being a dog… walking, playing, tail wagging,
looking for treats and being devoted to my human companion.
I can do all of that and more. I am very smart
and I listen well. That means I would be easy to train
and quick to learn.
I am already housebroken. I am heartworm positive
 which sounds scary
but I will be easily treated by the shelter
after I am adopted. Several volunteers have fostered other dogs
through the treatment and tell me it isn’t hard at all especially since
I am already good at taking it easy! I am ready to go home. All I
need is you! Please crosspost near and far for me and
contact kmenzyk@yahoo.com if you can save me.
The shelter pull fee is paid!

Transport is available to the northeast.

About us: TCHS takes care of the dogs that come in to the county dog pound which is a kill shelter. We are very rescue friendly and work very hard so no adoptable dogs get euthanized. All dogs are vaccinated on intake to the shelter and we do behavior assessments. We have a very low adoption rate in our area so we rely on rescues to save the majority of the dogs that come in to the pound."

UPDATE 8/19/13, 8/18/13 "Final update from ‪#‎FallonSlaughter‬: 316 horses sold at auction. Kill buyers probably got 200. We got 149 unbranded horses pulled from the auction. This was a nightmare day. All we can say tonight is that we're going to double down on our campaign to ‪#‎KeepWildHorsesWild‬. We hope you'll keep fighting with us."

Such a sad commentary on humanity and the way they treat each other, the planet and animals. The horses the Kill Buyers bought will  have a horrible death, many in slaughter houses in Mexico and Canada. Please support those working to save horses. And  let the  Indian Tribe know who sold horses that they shamed their heritage by being pushed around by big business and greed.  What happened to Native Americas? The government and business have destroyed their culture over the years. There must be another solution to free roaming horses besides slaughter. Sounds familiar to those who want to save feral cats.
If you want to see how the killing is done,  there are videos on You Tube. Who would want to see this I can't imagine. I  had to stop watching it, it was  hell for these animals but if you can watch it. it may give those of you who right now could care less about saving horses a dose of the reality all animals, not just horses, go through at slaughter houses. Factory farming, assembly line slaughter are barbaric.

 Update 8/19/13 from American Wild
Horse Preservation
I wanted to send you a final update from the Fallon slaughter auction, which
I attended on Saturday with my colleague Deniz Bolbol and many other horse advocates.
Late Friday night, we received a Temporary Restraining Order, as a result of our lawsuit
against the federal government, to block the sale of all unbranded horses at the auction.
All of the horses had been captured from the Fort McDermitt Paiute Shoshone
Reservation and surrounding public lands. The horses were separated -- branded
from unbranded -- on Saturday morning. After visually inspecting every pen,
we ensured that approximately 149 unbranded horses were pulled from the sale.

The horses remain at the livestock auction, now in the care of the U.S. Forest Service,
while we continue to fight to have them returned to the range. A federal court hearing
on our case is scheduled for Wednesday, August 21.
A special thanks to those of you who have given to our legal fund in the past. You make
litigation like this possible and play a critical role in helping us save these 149 horses
and ensure that their federal legal protections are upheld.
Please consider pitching in to our legal fund today to ensure that we have the resources necessary to keep fighting for these horses.
Sadly, until the SAFE Act is passed to ban horse slaughter, there is no legal way to
protect privately owned horses sold for slaughter. In the end, approximately 316 horses
were sold at Saturday's auction. The kill buyers got about 200, while about 100 or so
 branded horses were rescued.

Beautiful Horses sold for slaughter to kill buyer.

Kill Buyer Ole Olsen drives off with branded
 stallions purchased from the
Fallon Livestock Auction on 8/17/13.
Our lawsuit saved 149 unbranded horses
from this same fate - at least for the moment.
It was devastating to see horses -- including mature stallions and mares who had just had their
young foals pulled from them -- sold in lots to the kill buyers. We saw very lame horses, horses
with what appeared to be spinal injuries barely able to stand, horses with gaping wounds
on their chests, bloody faces, orphaned foals.

There is no mistaking what a tragedy this was. But we also have to think about what has
been achieved so far.

Before we got involved, the Forest Service was going to round up 700-1000 horses and send
them to the slaughter auction. This was a backroom deal to launder federally protected wild
horses through a tribe and use federal dollars to send them to a slaughter auction, allowing
the tribe to reap the profits. We stopped this action, and took a stand against these kinds of
sordid backroom deals.
Thanks to our legal and public relations efforts, the Feds pulled out of the roundup, and far
fewer horses -- approximately 467 -- were actually captured. Of those, 149 unbranded horses
were pulled from the auction, and another 100+ horses were saved by hard working rescue groups.

We'll continue to fight for the unbranded horses whose fate will be decided at Wednesday's
 hearing.
Will you continue to fight with us?

We need your help to ensure that we have the resources to take on the Feds in the courtroom this Wednesday. Will you please donate to our legal fund today?

We are proud to be joined in this litigation by our founding organization Return To Freedom,
The Cloud Foundation, Western Watersheds Project and Laura Leigh of Wild Horse Education.
But AWHPC alone bears the financial burden for the substantial legal bills we are accumulating
 to help these horses.

This weekend was a strong reminder not only of the unfinished business we have before us, but
also of what we can accomplish when we all work together. We hope that you will continue to
stand with us, and we thank you very much for your compassion, caring and support.

- Suzanne

8/17/2013 "UPDATE from ‪#‎FallonSlaughter‬: We inspected every horse and found 43 additional unbranded horses. Total of 113 unbranded horses have been pulled from the auction. We saw many lame horses, spinal injuries, two orphaned foals whose mothers were killed here, chest gashes. Most of the branded horses are headed for slaughter -- kill buyers are here in force. Their nightmare is just beginning. This is hell right here for horses."

I'll get back to posting shelter dogs and cats after this post. I think this is important information for people to read. It really is the same old same old, people's cruelty toward animals partly sanctioned by government regulations and people who are greedy for profit and power and use animals for that goal  To them animals are not sentient beings but objects.  The way people treat animals shows alot about them and the society we live in.  The miserable ride to slaughter and then the terror of the slaughterhouse. Happens to all animals used for food "harvested" by much agra business or factory farms. Money above compassion all the time for the " Kill buyers" at these auctions.

"Horse Slaughter - an American Disgrace:  Horse slaughter is the way by which irresponsible people get rid of their unwanted horses quickly and for a profit. Every year, well over 170,000 equines from the United States are slaughtered for human consumption to satisfy the taste for horsemeat in Europe and Japan where it is considered a delicacy."

Dark Horse ( A MUST read. It is sickening what is done to the horses. It is Beyond sickening. The only way to stop this is to know about it and support bills that will stop it, donate to rescues, take in a horse if you can)

For many equines that have served humans faithfully, an undignified end awaits

At the auction, Pat leaves the bleachers frequently to track down Thoroughbreds, and while she is away, quite a few of them stream in and out of the noisy bidding ring, along with other breeds, too many to list, all in and out so fast it is hard to keep track of the numbers and prices. All of the following, which is in no way a complete list, were taken by the kill buyers:
– Thoroughbred bay gelding: $310
– Thoroughbred chestnut gelding: $325
– Palomino gelding, whipped several times by rider: $450
– Two Thoroughbred geldings, lost track of price
– Thoroughbred gelding, no price that I can hear, exits early
– Standardbred mare, leaves the ring early. On her way out, Mennonite boys whip her repeatedly in the face. Russek will tell me later that some of the Amish and Mennonites can be “truly heartless” in the way they treat their horses, an observation that is, in all but the same words, repeated by a horse rescue worker who reported her experience at an Indiana auction on the Grateful Acres website: “The kill pen is full of Belgian draft horses, the powerful, living machinery of Amish farms. . . . [T]he Belgians in this pen are grievously and horrifyingly injured. They have been worked until they literally cannot stand any longer. . . . No matter that the animal has slaved . . . for any number of years, no matter that his swollen, oozing knee is collapsing at every forced step. Just as a broken plow would be sold to the junk man for the metal, these broken animals are sold to the kill-man for meat.”
– Thoroughbred / Quarter Horse cross: $125
– Farm horse sold “as is” leaves ring early
– Paso Fino gelding, eleven years old, brown with white face: $160

For those of us who will never get to the kill floor, or who have not the stomach to watch the videos on YouTube, here are two short excerpts, the first from the notes of an Animal and Plant Health Inspection Investigator at eleven-twenty a.m. on April 13, 2005, at the Cavel slaughter plant in DeKalb, Illinois:
Eight horses were in the alleyway leading directly to the knock-box. . . . The employee who is routinely assigned to work on the kill floor, hanging the horses on the rails, was using a riding crop to whip the horse in the alleyway closest to the knock-box. This horse continued to move backward, away from the knock-box causing the other horses behind it to be overcrowded. As the whipping continued the horses in the alleyway became extremely excited. I immediately told the employee to stop but he did not listen to me. During this time, the last horse in the alleyway attempted to jump over the alleyway wall and became stuck over the top of the wall. Eventually it had flailed around enough to fall over to the other side of the wall. I went to the kill floor to find the plant manager, could not find him. . . . Meanwhile two more horses fell down in the alleyway. The first was the second horse in line to the knock-box. It had fallen forward and the horse behind it began to walk on top of it as the downed horse struggled to get up. The second horse to fall was the fourth horse in line. It had flipped over backwards due to the overcrowding and was subsequently trapped and trampled by the fifth and sixth horses in line in their excitement. . . .

The Fuzzy Math Being Used to Justify Horse Slaughter in the United States

Survey of Trucking Practices and Injury to Slaughter Horses

Temple Grandin, Kasie McGee and Jennifer Lanier
Department of Animal Sciences
Colorado State University
Fort Collins, CO 80523-1171

ABSTRACT

Sixty-three trailer loads arriving at two slaughter plants in Texas were observed in July and August of 1998. A total of 1008 horses were surveyed. Forty-two percent of the horses were transported on double decks, 9% on straight single deck semi-trailers and 49% on goosenecks. The average number of horses on each load was double decks 28, single deck straight trailers 22 and goosenecks 11. The maximum number transported on each type of trailer was double decks 45, single deck straight trailers 25 and goosenecks 22. Ninety-two percent of the horses arrived in good condition and 1.5% were not fit for travel. A total of 78 horses (7.7%) had severe welfare problems. Six percent 60 horses out of the 7.7% had conditions caused by owner neglect or abuse and only 1.8% (18 horses) had transport and marketing injuries severe enough to be rated a severe welfare problem. Owner problems were significantly greater than transport problems (chi square> .001). Examples of origin welfare problems were loaded with a broken leg, emaciated, foundered, race horses with bowed tendons and horses that were too weak to be transported.

Fighting was a major cause of injuries during transport and marketing. Thirteen percent of the carcasses had bruises caused by bites or kicks. Fifty-one percent of all carcass bruises were caused by bites or kicks. To reduce injuries aggressive mares and geldings must be removed and held in a separate pen in the same manner as stallions. Loads from dealers who picked up horses from more than one auction had more external injuries and carcass bruises than direct loads (chi square> .001). The authors make the following recommendations: 1) Educate horse owners they are responsible for horse welfare, 2) Horse associations should all have animal care guidelines, 3) Station USDA/APHIS trained welfare inspectors in slaughter plants, 4) Fine individuals who transport horses unfit for travel, 5) Segregate aggressive mares and geldings in the same manner as stallions, 6) Improve horse identification,.." read the rest.

8/17/13 Update Wild Horse Slaughter Nevada. Some Horses' Lives WILL END by the CRUEL Practice of ASSEMBLY LINE HORSE SLAUGHTER, OTHERS WILL NOT. "Late yesterday evening a federal court judge in Nevada issued an order to block the sale of all unbranded horses at the Fallon Slaughter Auction today. "Late yesterday evening a federal court judge in Nevada issued an order to block the sale of all unbranded horses at the Fallon Slaughter Auction today. The ruling was in response to a lawsuit filed by AWHPC and others.
Sadly, an undetermined number of branded horses "owned" by the tribe that rounded them up will still be sold at the auction. Unfortunately, no law protects these horses. Their terrible fate highlights the need to pass U.S. legislation to ban the cruel practice of horse slaughter once and for all.
AWHPC is on hand at the auction today to ensure that the no wild horses are sold to the kill buyers, whose trucks will soon be lining up outside the auction.
We can already tell you that the Temporary Restraining Order has been delivered, that we've been asked to leave the property, and that the auction owner is sorting branded from unbranded horses as we write this.

Thank you for your support that has allowed us to file this litigation, and for making your voice heard yesterday to the highest levels of our government.
We will keep you updated on this fast-breaking situation.
Thanks,

- The AWHPC Team"

I wonder why Native Americans are selling their horses to slaughter. Maybe they cannot afford to feed them. This is hard times for many horse owners. So tragic that a "tribe" has to do this for whatever reason. Have they betrayed their ancestral connection with their horses?

See  what is going on with the horses. I tell you  many human beings are... well that is all I will say.

8/16/13 As Americans Do We Want Our Wild Horses or Any Horses on American Soil Rounded Up and Sent to Mexican or Canadian Slaughter Houses? "Lawsuit Filed to Stop Sale of Wild Horses at Slaughter Auction on Saturday.Wild Horse & Conservation Groups Allege Feds Failed to Protect Wild Horses in Tribal Roundup; 467 Horses Await Fate at Slaughter Auction"

What has Happened to the Heart of Humanity to Allow This Abuse of Horses?

The transport of these horses to slaughter plants in this country is bad enough but to transport them to other countries is despicable. These horses are living creatures with family bonds and how they are treated by "kill" buyers at auctions and how whole families are rounded up by helicopters shows what happens when people become callus and indifferent and forget they are part of the world, not in control of it. I know this is a dog and cat blog but these horses need support.  These horses are going to be killed in a horrible assembly line manner just like all the " meat " we eat in factory farms unless animal lovers and horse lovers and people who know  life matters, people with awareness take action.

"A total of 467 horses were captured by the tribe and delivered to the slaughter auction, according to officials, where they await their fate. An undetermined number of these horses are unbranded and likely to be wild horses. The Forest Service has acknowledged that most of these horses will be purchased by kill buyers and trucked to slaughter plants in Canada or Mexico. Photographs of the horses show hundreds of mares and foals, yearlings and adults crammed into pens at the stockyard.

Gunner & Bodie Need IMMEDIATE RESCUE!
2 Dogs from Hoarding Situation – OUT OF TIME at Shelter
Hillsboro, OH
CONTACT: Sarah with The Way Home Rescue Alliance at twhrarescueoffers@gmail.com (<@gmail.com >)

Gunner and Bodie are in IMMEDIATE need of rescue. These 2 dogs originally came from the Estill County Animal Shelter in Ravenna, KY in 2012. At that time, TWHRA confirmed rescue for them with Deb Rodgers with Cares About Life Rescue in Ohio. Though her references checked out great, we found out in April 2013 that she was a hoarder and had approximately 120 dogs at her property. The authorities raided her property and seized several of the dogs there, 2 of which were Gunner and Bodie.
TWHRA was shocked, as well as sickened, to find that we had been sending dogs to this so called “rescue.” I personally went to the property after the authorities got involved and was heartbroken at the living conditions I saw for these animals. This is a rescue’s worse nightmare…to find that you have sent dogs to a place that is probably worse than where they came from to begin with, all in an effort to give them a second chance in life.
Gunner and Bodie, 2 of the dogs that were seized because they were living in some of the worst conditions at the property, have been at the Highland County Pound in Ohio since the investigation began and charges were filed against Deb back in April 2013. Gunner and Bodie have been available for adoption or to go to rescue for some time now through the Highland County Pound, and I’ve been trying to help find them placement. I have remained in contact with the Highland County ACO regarding Gunner & Bodie.
Per my most recent communication with the ACO, Gunner and Bodie are now in IMMEDIATE DANGER of being PTS if they don’t get rescue. The Highland County Pound only has 15 kennels, and last week they had to euthanize 4 times due to overcrowding and lack of space. They have been trying to allow more time for Gunner and Bodie simply due to the situation they came out of, but their TIME IS UP. There have been too many dogs coming through this shelter and not enough space.

TWHRA would love nothing more than to just go get these boys ourselves, but we have no where to put them. Currently we have several dogs in boarding due to a lack of foster homes. The boarding kennel is full with no space coming open in the near future due to dogs there waiting to go on out of state transports, dogs that TWHRA is currently having boarded that we are still trying to find rescue for, as well as the regular client dogs at the kennel.

TWHRA is determined to save Gunner and Bodie. We cannot let these boys die after all they have been through. This is tragic and heartbreaking and they never deserved any of it. We are BEGGING for help from our rescue friends for these boys. TIME IS UP for them and we have to find them somewhere to go or they will NOT get out of the pound alive. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help.
TWHRA would be happy to help make arrangements for transport, vetting….anything we can do to save these boys! I am personally willing to make a donation towards their vetting to the rescue that can take one or both of them!
If you can help, PLEASE email Sarah at twhrarescueoffers@gmail.com IMMEDIATELY! Time is of the essence for these boys! Photos and additional information on Gunner and Bodie are below.
Thank you for your time! We hope to hear from you!
Sarah Jones, TWHRA

GUNNER - 2 year old, male, boxer mix. Already neutered. HW tested negative in 2012, but it is unknown if Gunner was on regular preventative when under Deb Rodgers care. Gunner gets along with other dogs, is very friendly, playful and affectionate....super sweet boy and would make a great companion!

BODIE - 2 year old, male, shepherd mix. Already neutered. HW tested negative in 2012, but it is unknown if Bodie was on regular preventative when under Deb Rodgers care. Bodie gets along with other dogs, but seems to prefer the company of female dogs the most. Bodie has a loving and kind personality and a great disposition. She is a beautiful 14 month old pointer X who is already spayed and weighs about 55 lbs. Check out her aquamarine eyes!!! She is calm and mannerly, is good on the leash, good with children, and loves belly rubs. She is at the York County Animal Shelter, York SC . If we can find a rescue, we will probably need a local foster to make it happen."

We have lost our contract with Hill's Science Diet that was providing us with free dog food all these years due to not having enough adoptions, very sad.Particularly sad, since we are partnered with Pet Charities and place many wonderful dogs in wonderful homes through their program. These are not considered "adoptions" by Science Diet.) We need dry dog food donations now to take care of the dogs and puppies at the shelter."

I am not sure if the shelter is still in need. There is no date on this. It may be an ongoing issue so please contact the shelter to see what the present situation is and please if you are are a rescue help them out. R Cats & Dogs

We have lost our contract with Hill's Science Diet that was providing us with free dog food all these years due to not having enough adoptions, very sad. (Particularly sad, since we are partnered with Pet Charities and place many wonderful dogs in wonderful homes through their program. These are not considered "adoptions" by Science Diet.) We need dry dog food donations now to take care of the dogs and puppies at the shelter. You can drop off food or mail a donation and put in the memo "food" and we will use it to buy food for the shelter. It takes a lot of dry food to feed them all. Our preference is Pedigree dry for Adults and Puppies however we accept and are grateful for ANY Brands.
