The shelter has fosters lined up for 30 day quarantine
 for these dogs
 -- they desperately need to move them out so
 they can clean the
shelter. The shelter did have an outbreak of distemper
 and it's impossible
 to say which dogs have or haven't been exposed,
but the 30 day
quarantine should make them safe for transport
when they complete it.

How to Adopt or Foster

If you are ready to save an animal from the NYC shelter,
 congratulations! You have made a wonderful decision!
You will see references to "SAFER" frequently. This is
 standardized behavior test intended to help predict possible
 future aggression in the home. Thank you for trying to 
save an NYC ACC animal and good luck!!

Here are the two ways you can adopt 

or foster an NYC ACC animal:

1. Adopt Directly from the Shelter 

 (no Fosters!)

You can adopt directly from the shelter but only healthy
 animals who have passed their SAFER are shown on the
 ACC website for adoption by the public. The shelter will 
adopt out to local and long distance adopters - but you must
 be able to go to the shelter in person. (Long distance is 
defined as more than a few hours driving one-way.)
Please note that once an animal fails its SAFER, it will be
 removed from the ACC website, and it may or may not
 remain in the shelter for the public to view and adopt if they
go there in person. If it is rated New Hope (NH) placement only,
 you cannot adopt the animal directly. You must work with
an approved NH partner rescue group. Once an animal is sick,
 it too may be removed from the ACC website for adoption  
and it may be moved to isolation out of public view.

2. Adopt or Foster an Animal With 

Help from a Rescue Group

As stated before, once an animal is sick or has failed it's SAFER, it will
 no longer appear on the ACC website for adoption but it will appear
 in our albums - Urgents, Super Urgents, and To Be Destroyed.
To foster or adopt one of these animals with a rescue group, you
 must work with one who is an approved ACC New Hope Partner.
Please note that most rescues prefer that animals on the To Be
 Destroyed list only be fostered or adopted by someone local
 (Tri-State/New England/PA/VA areas) because time is of the
 essence and home visits are often required by the rescue groups.

UPDATE MICKEY WAS  RESCUED AND ADOPTED! according to Delette
Mickey is an 8 year young female cat who is losing the life that she knows tomorrow.  Her owner is moving and cannot take her.  She is spayed and up to date on vaccinations.  Mickey is good with dogs, but her owner does not know how she would be with cats because she hasn't been with any.  She is very friendly and loves to play

They do what former owners could not do or decided not to do for a variety of reasons:  give  care and love and safety to an animal and the opportunity for a new life to the animal when they can no longer care for him or her. These people are doing a job for all of us.  They have to constantly ask for help. The animals depend on them. Without them there would be even more homeless stray animals wandering the streets suffering and dying.  Without them there would be no chance for these dogs and cats.  Without them where would the dog or cat go when it was no longer wanted or when there was no money to feed the animal or provide medical care?   Please be generous this holiday season with a donation or your time and volunteer.

NYC AC&C’s website proclaims that their mission is “to promote and protect the health, safety and welfare of pets and people in New York City.” Well, it looks like we can classify that as an Epic Fail. Or is it an Epic Lie?  It certainly has been an Epic Disaster of late.

For months now, and in ever-increasing numbers, we have seen dogs coming out of NYC AC&C’s shelters with respiratory illnesses which go above and beyond the regular run-of-the-mill kennel cough. Dogs have come out with combinations (co-infections) of adenovirus, mycoplasma cynos, pulmonary e coli infections, various pneumonias, and canine influenza in addition to the standard kennel cough bugs. The presence of each of these illnesses is scary enough on their own, but even more frightening is the fact that some animals are getting so sick they are not making it out alive. Recently, more and more dogs have been dying in their cages… left to suffer alone, and without appropriate medical care, their lungs slowly filling up with fluid until they can no longer provide their bodies with the oxygen/carbon dioxide exchange necessary to maintain life. A few days ago, little Nam was the latest in a too-rapidly growing list of victims.

3 senior cats will be euthanized if adopters or rescues do not take them in.  They must have a place to go today.  Owner was found dead.  Younger cats were already taken by a rescue leaving 3 seniors behind.  Anyone ?
