Subject: UPDATE on Needs & Contacts for Louisville Metro Animal Services EMERGENCY (Tues pm)
Date: Tue, 4 Aug 2009 22:24:44 -0400

After the flooding today Metro Animal Services loaded all their animals into tractor trailers and took them to the Fairgrounds (Gate 4, Off Crittenden Drive, Parking Lot J, near the Pavilion behind the West Wing). They will have temporary shelter there. (Water is waist deep at the shelter.) TONIGHT only Gate #3 is open--guard will let you in after looking at your driver's license and direct you to West Wing Pavilion (live animal wing).

They need volunteers, cat and dog crates, towels, dog shampoo, cat food, bowls, leashes, disposable kitty litter boxes (small, low-sided cardboard bottoms like under canned goods, cat food cans, etc.). I bet they need kitty litter scoops, too...
Since the animals were swimming in fecal material, they ALL need to be bathed tomorrow at the latest--and dried off--and given shots to protect them from disease. Any help with this process would be greatly appreciated!

Pam Rogers (Humane Society of the U.S.) would like all available hands to report to the fairgrounds, Gate 4 is closest, to help care for the animals. Many are traumatized, as expected. Please take ANY AVAILABLE CRATES, dog kennels, dog runs, kennel panels, etc that you have access to. They will need help overnight if anyone can stay. This is truly an emergency.

Pam is working with Home Depot to secure kennel panels and kennel runs. We will need people to help assemble them, so BRING YOUR TOOL KIT and zip-ties.

Other needed items: pee pads, any and all cardboard you can take. We slide these between crates so animals don't distress each other.

Please crosspost, and remember that LMAS will need our help to disinfect the buildings when the water recedes. Until then, if you have a van or large-capacity vehicle, you might be asked to run errands to pick up much-needed supplies.

Earlier email said contact was David Neeson, he is a former Metro employee who helped with the emergency disaster plan and came back to help today but Metro contacts are:

KAREN DIXON 502-594-1621 or SHERRI MARCOSKI 502-608-4708. Email is animals@louisvilleky.gov . They lost their computers today...they lost everything, including most of their records of the animals.
