"Sweet JOSIE
CHARLOTTE, NC....We were contacted by another Rescue in the Charlotte area
that had picked up as a stray the saddest, most pitiful looking Schnauzer
you have ever seen. They sent us her pics and said she was critical and
could not take her into their care, so I agreed to take her. We originally
were going to call her Louise since we had just rescued a Thelma until we
scanned her for a microchip and found one. Her Microchip showed our sweet
girl was seven years old, and her name was Josie. The number listed for
her had been disconnected and there was no way to get in touch with her
Family, so we had her taken to Carolina Veterinary Specialists in Matthews,
NC for Medical Treatment.
Josie arrived and was so lethargic that she was taken to ICU immediately
and that is where she has remained. She was emaciated with lots of
terrible sores all over her body. She had patches of hair that were missing
and did not show any indication it was going to grow back. We have sent
off a Thyroid panel and lots of other tests that we are waiting for the
results to come back. Josie's poor skin is a hot mess all over. The ER
Team has already started her on medicated baths to see if we can get her
skin to calm down, but her overall demeanor is a very depressed dog. We
do not have a clue how long this sweet pup was on her own, but it appears
for quite a while. She was covered with fleas when she came in but did
not have leaves and debris caught in her fur from wandering around outside.
Josie's eyes are in terrible shape, and she can barely see from the
infections she has. I suspect someone had her pinned up in a yard and
then when she became lethargic, that discarded her. Poor girl looks like
she is around 15 years old. It is hard to believe she is only seven. We
suspect she has a thyroid issue based on how bad her skin is. This
wonderful dog is way too young to be giving up, so we are going to do
everything possible to get her feeling better. We are hopeful once her
lab results come back, we will have a better idea of what is causing her
system to be so depressed. She has a lot more going on than being
abandoned. Until we figure it out, she is being loved and pampered by
everyone that is responsible for her care.
I will never understand anyone that has an animal and then sits around and
watches them get sick or are hurt and in terrible pain and do nothing.
All it takes is a little love and care and not letting a situation get out
of control. What could have cost a hundred dollars, in the beginning, is
now into the thousands and the animal has suffered for months. Animals are
not Throw-Away Toys. They are living, breathing beautiful creatures that
love us unconditionally.
Josie did not deserve the Life she has had. She is a sweet pup that is
scared and very sick. She does not have a clue what is going on in her
Life. She is starting to realize that we are the good people and are not
ever going to let anything bad happen to her again. Please, DONATE,
toward Josie's extensive Medical Bills. She is going to be in the Hospital
for quite a while getting better and then will come to our Rehab Facility
recovering until she can be placed in a loving home. If we cannot get
Josie stabilized, then she will come to our Facility and live out her Life
with us surrounded by people that will love and adore her, unconditionally.

'If you think one of these cats belongs to you, PLEASE go IN PERSON
immediately! Cats get 72 hours. After that, it's dependent on space and
health. The cats get sick with upper respiratory infections quickly due
to stress, so they are euthanized soon after their 72 hold is up... so
it is imperative to reclaim right away! If you are a rescue interested
in tagging a cat, please tag them immediately! There is no time to wait
since cats are euthanized 6 days per week at this facility. This is a
volunteer run page and not maintained by employees of the shelter. If
you have specific and immediate questions, please contact the shelter.''

If you're thinking of re-homing or giving up your animal, please take into
consideration the amount of homeless and abandoned animals there
currently are & seek out ways to get help via an animal
trainer/behaviorist . Many rescues & shelters
are full to capacity with
companion animals looking for a place to call their own.

Some things you should know when working with us:
To become a Placement Partner with HEART you must complete the Placement Partner Application and agree to the Placement Partner Guidelines. Please contact info@heartofthemidlands.org to complete the process. Animals on this list are only available to 501(c)(3) Placement Partners with the HEART Program.
Not all animals listed on this email are available TODAY! Please note the "FINAL DAY AVAILABLE" indicating when their time is up. Following your confirmation of each animal you will be notified when they are available to be picked up. You will have 24 hours from time of confirmation to pick up the animals at the shelters.
Please reply to this email address to confirm animals you wish to pull. When you reply to confirm animals, please include your email address, what rescue you work with and a contact phone number along with the animal ID#.
Dogs are not heartworm tested until a rescue confirms them (unless otherwise noted). If you CANNOT take a HW+ animal, please mention it when you confirm. If heartworm status is not acceptable once it is determined you may decline to take the dog.
We CANNOT guarantee the health or behavior of an animal. The animals have not been examined by a veterinarian unless otherwise noted.
Please note following a commitment to a specific animal that animal must be picked up at the designated shelter within 24 hours.
Pull fees MUST be paid to HEART at the time of confirming the animal, and at the absolute latest, when the animal is picked up from their shelter. We do not have the capability to invoice- sorry!
You must arrange your own transport!
Please be patient with us. Currently we have a very small staff dedicated to the rescue placement process and they visit each shelter daily. So a good deal of their time is spent in the field. They sift through many emails and calls every day. They will respond to your inquiry, but it may be a brief exchange and may not be immediate. Thank you for understanding!

These animals are located at Iredell County Animal Services in Statesville, NC!
At this time, Iredell County Animal Services does NOT have transport “connections” so it will be UP TO THE RESCUE wanting to pull the animal to coordinate transport!
If there is an animal listed that you are interested in pulling or have questions about please email Tina at rescuepets@co.iredell.nc.us and please provide the animals name (and/or Animal ID#), your name and the rescue group you are affiliated with! If you have not pulled from ICAS before please fill out Rescue Group Agreement (Breed Placement Package) that is attached.
We now offer health certificates for animals pulled from ICAS by the destination shelter/rescue/home for a $6 fee per animal on the health certificate. If an animal is being pulled by a rescue for another rescue we will not be able to do a health certificate. The final rescue/home must be the one to “pull” the dog. If the pulling rescue is new you MUST submit the Breed Placement Package BEFORE any hold or transport will be planned!

Notes from his evaluation with a trainer:
A prong collar was used to walk J.C. from the kennel and outside. He responded VERY well to correction. He seemed as though he has never had boundaries established before. He is a very sweet boy, and listens well after a relationship is built, and he is dominated. He is very confident in himself, but not overly so. The trainer did restrain J.C. and he did react by trying to grab at her jacket and the leash. She corrected him, and then restrained him again, and he tolerated the restraint with no problem. He will just need a firm hand, and some proper training. He was dog tested with Leanne, a female dog of slightly smaller size. He approached Leanne with good manners, and was interested in playing with her. Would recommend rescue so that his restraint issue can be resolved.
JC (A214075) was surrendered to the shelter by his owner. They stated that he is too big. The owner got JC from a pet store and has owned him for 2 years. The owner stated JC lived inside and was house trained. They also stated that JC was ok with children, but we have noticed while he has been at the shelter that he will buck up to see what he can get away with when he is not wanting to do something. He also does not like restrained therefore we would not recommend him in a home with children. In July 2015 JC tested negative for heartworms, due to him not doing well with restraint we have not yet heartworm tested him. We think that with a firm, consistent owner who is willing to do some training that JC could be a great dog. We also feel that him being neutered will make a big difference. JV is a blue brindle like color, he has whisker like fur on his face and paws. We think it is possible that JC is a Greyhound/Schnauzer blend as he weighs about 40 lbs.

Kodak (A206654) was surrendered to the shelter because they could not properly care for him. Kodak has demodex (non-contagious mange). This boy has so much personality and is just full of himself! We have started him on Bravecto (which has been shown to help the symptoms of demodex) and his fur seems to be coming in nicely! Kodak was dog tested and was sweet tempered and playful, although he is in need of some leash work (which we have been working on). Kodak loves to play and loves attention. This guy is all-around super happy and fun! Silly Kodak is right over a year young, up to date on vaccines, heartworm negative and full grown at almost 51 lbs.

Needs to be CLAIMED and OUT OF THE SHELTER by NOON on: 3/24/17
Kipper (A214125) is a 1 year old Treeing Walker Hound that was surrendered to the shelter by his owner. Our Officer received a complaint about a dog that is always loose and was chasing chicken. They stated their they got the dog for their daughter, but he would bolt out of the house. They also stated that he showed signs of separation anxiety (was not crated) when left in the home alone all day. Kipper was terrified when he got to the shelter, he would sit balled up and just tremble. During his exam he did do a low growl during the restraint, but never offered to bite. Due to being so nervous we decided the best route was rescue for this handsome boy. Kipper likes to be petted on, but still trembles while in his kennel. Kipper walks ok on a leash and was dog tested with a female of slightly smaller height. He approached her politely then walked away. He was very well mannered. Kipper is full grown weighing 46.2 lbs and is heartworm negative. This boy needs to build some confidence. He showed a lot of interest in cats, so we would recommend placement with no cats (or chickens).

Piper (A214297) is an 11 month old Pointer/Lab blend that was surrendered to the shelter. We 1st became aware of Piper when there was a complaint about her running loose. Our owner spoke to the owner about direct control and gave the dog a rabies vaccine. The next day the owner stated that they noticed a large wound on Piper's belly and could not afford to take her to the vet for treatment and surrendered her to us. Piper appeared to be in heat or just coming out of heat. Our vet cleaned and sutured her up, she also spayed her while she had her under. The wound is healing very well and Piper doesn't seemed phased by her injury. Piper was dog tested with a female dog of smaller size and was very playful with the "helper dog". She seemed very excited to be around another dog. She was submissive and did great! Piper is also heartworm negative. She weighs about 50 lbs.

Baby (A205519) is a 2 year old Pit Bull who has not had a consistent home life. She was originally surrendered to the shelter in May 2016. They stated they had owned Baby for 7-8 months, they got her from the previous owners. They were surrendered to the shelter because she was not doing well with the other dogs in the home. We dog tested her with another female dog and she did well and was playful with her. Baby was then adopted. Baby was then surrendered to the shelter March 2017. They stated they had her for 4-5 moths and they stated that Baby would play too rough with their 2 year old and snapped at him. They had gotten Baby from the previous adopters who had rehomed Baby because she did not get along with her other dogs (2 intact males, an intact and a spayed female). It seemed that Baby become overstimulated while playing with dogs and kids and becomes too rough. In her last home Baby was an inside dog and was house broken. We had a trainer come out and evaluated Baby. She stated that Baby does not seem overly confident in herself and constantly seeks reassurance from people. Baby did very well with a prong collar and only needed very minimal correction and responded immediately. She was dog tested with a female dog of slightly smaller size. As soon as Baby saw the "helper dog", she became defensive, but not offensively aggressive. She did sniff the "helper dog" from behind, and then backed away passively. The trainer feels as though Baby may have been consistently jumped by another dog. She was very leery of another dog approaching her from behind, and seemed to panic even though the "helper dog" only wanted to play. She had more fear than actual aggression. The trainer thinks that Baby needs work with her fears. Baby has shown to be gentle and sweet, but also terrified here at the shelter.

Original email sent out: 3/13/17
These animals are located at Iredell County Animal Services in Statesville, NC!

Needs to be CLAIMED and OUT OF THE SHELTER by NOON on: 3/20/17
Kodak (A206654) was surrendered to the shelter because they could not properly care for him.
Intake date: 3/6/17

Needs to be CLAIMED and OUT OF THE SHELTER by NOON on: 3/24/17
Piper (A214297) is an 11 month old Pointer/Lab blend that was surrendered to the shelter.
Intake date: 3/9/17
Needs to be CLAIMED and OUT OF THE SHELTER by NOON on: 4/3/17
Baby (A205519) is a 2 year old Pit Bull who has not had a consistent home life.

12/27/16 Can You Spare One Dollar to Save the Life of A Dog on Deathrow ? Please Support dogsindanger.com
So many wonderful dogs are killed each day. It is a sad fact. Please help organizations that save lives.
A donation of even one dollar can help. Remember the saying it takes a village to raise a child. Well It takes a group of compassionate people to donate even one dollar and that adds up to many dollars and that will give a dog who is scheduled to die a chance at a happy life. There is no way to turn away from the fact many wonderful animals are not given a chance to live out their lives. You can make a difference and help change this.

What is needed is a change in our individual consciousness about how we treat animals, ourselves and each other. The world seems to be in ruins these days, so much unresolved conflicts. The way we treat animals and have for decades is a symptom that we as a society, civilization and world are not living up to our potential as human beings who can live in harmony with each other and all the animals who inhabit the planet. If we don't stop all these "lower emotions" from directing our individual behaviours, is there any hope for the world and its conflicts?
More and more people are awakening to their true humanity which does not thrive on abandonment of animals, does not thrive on hurting self or others. Don't be part of the problem . Be part of the solution.
Do an act of kindness today even if you don't feel it.
There are angels on earth who know this truth and work tirelessly to help anyone in need. Support their efforts, please. They have the stamina to do this work like going out at 2 a.m. in bitterly cold weather to give homeless cats the only food they get for the day. They have the inner strength to go to Syria and provide aid to people caught in the civil war even if it costs them their lives.
Enough is enough, don't you think? Each person by holding this concern for our planet and each other and doing whatever small of kindness you can adds to the betterment of our world.

Subject: WINTER WISH LIST FOR SOME OF WESTERN OKLAHOMAS THROWAWAY BABIES...
It is getting colder..... So once again, we have been getting the pound and other holding areas ready for winter...
One of the best things I feel we have done was for the pound in a town 13 miles south of me.... The dogs there laid in kennels that had a back, roof and side, but with no dog houses, they were out in the cold, rain, wind, and worse, ice and snow...
They are small kennels.... When you open to clean or feed, the dogs were often getting out and running... one little yorkie was hit by a car...
We had fence donated and we made an area in front of the kennels that not only makes it safer for these fur babies, but they now have an area to play and exercise...
We put houses with blankets I.. the long timers were so happy... one sweet girl wouldn't even come out, she loved it so much...
We still have other holding areas we need to get ready... We need 8X10 heavy tarps.... strong zip ties.... water buckets and food bowls.... 2 large dog houses....BLANKETS, BLANKETS AND MORE BLANKETS....
We have a generator set up for one of the holding places.... We have been
able to get kennels and a building at two other locations... (remember, we
help 5 surrounding pounds)
We know this is a lot to ask, but we have to try... even if you would like
to do a few bucks for this.... all would add up...
we want TWO more generators.... I have found around here (100 miles away)
the cheapest ones have been at a store called Harbor Freight... Because
they will be running electric heaters, we need them to be higher
voltage....
If this is something you are considering helping with, you could even send
a small gift card towards it and we would save until we raise and make
enough...
So, there is our winter wish list... The cold is here... we need to get
these babies warm and safe...
Thank you,
Terry Lynn

11/21/16 Syrian Cat Shelter Bombed. The Cat Man of Aleppo. Are You Ashamed to Be a Human Being? Power Hungry Rulers. Feuding Religious Groups. Kill Children in Children's Hospital and Cats In Syria. Will People Ever Wake Up? Who Bombs a Cat Sanctuary or Hospital? Isn't It Time We ALL Became RESPONSIBLE CITIZENS OF THE PLANET. The Bombers Murdered a Dog Named Hope With Their Bombs? Is Killing Cats and Children and Starving People the Way To Create Peace. The Indiscriminate Bombing of Hospitals, Daycare Centers, and Animal Shelter Must Stop. Did the Bombers Know They Were Killing Cats and Children? If They Did and Didn't Care... You Fill in the Blank.
I don't mean to upset anyone but then again maybe we all need to get more upset, to hold leaders more accountable. Not all were animals killed in Aleppo but hospitals were bombed, children died. The city is in rubble. When will man learn this never solves a thing. The problem is human consciousness,

Do an act of kindness and donate to any of the many causes where people are helping people and people are helping animals. Remember all the Hopes Killed in war torn countries. Hope looked like such a great dog. RIP.

10/26/16 "Where will they go or get fed when it snows? The black and white and orange and white could possibly come in and live as house pets but will be frightened at first and need time to adjust but most shelters don't want that kind of cat and I don't have the space for them. These guys I believe might have been someone's pet a long time ago. The tabby is definitely a feral but is getting used to me and doesn't run off anymore. We need more people or shelters willing to take these cats and give them the time they need to adjust or they will stay out on the streets living the lousy lives they live. Winter is here and soon the snow will be too." Forgotten Felines of Boston. Please Help the Cats.
While we are safe and warm in our homes in the winter these cats come out in the middle of the night to be fed by compassionate people. Some are house pets abandoned by heartless owners. Others are offspring of the abandoned cats. Please contact Bostons Forgotten Felines if you can provide help for one of these cats whether a feral or just a frightened and abandoned cat. They need to be fed daily and have shelter from the cold and snow in order to survive. They are victims of man's inhumanity. Those of us who value compassion for all beings whether two or four footed need to step up and transform this world of ours into a place of peace and harmony or as close to that as we can get as human beings.

The phrase high kill is horrific. But it is real. We as a society MUST CHANGE if we are to survive. Let this change start with one act of loving kindness daily. How about going to a high kill shelter and saving a life, allowing a dog or cat to feel the joys of a loving safe home where people know what caring is. Animals have a lot to teach us.

9/6/16 "Rescue groups scramble to save pit bulls ahead of proposed breed ban in Montreal" Breed Discrimination Shows Lack Of Discrimination IMO- For Wonderful Family Pets and Other Pits this Can Be A Death Sentence. Who Cares? Right. This is Doggie Racism IMO. Inhumane and Cruel. Dogs are Individuals like People. To Say One Breed Has to Go From an Entire State or City Shows Poor Critical Thinking Skills by Law Makers and Sheer Ignorance.

9/1/16"In August 2016, Ascension Parish and surrounding areas experienced record breaking floods.Right now CARA's house is caring for 180+ stray animals brought in as a result of the flood. Animals have continued to be surrendered daily. Many will likely not be reclaimed due to owners not looking for them, unable to find them, or just physically unable to take them back due to homelessness. All these animals will need vetting, which is another unexpected expense. We expect to not only be dealing with initial vetting, but heartworm positive dogs and a multitude of other medical issues.. "In August 2016, Ascension Parish and surrounding areas experienced record breaking floods. As a result, CARA's House shelter was flooded and displaced to a temporary holding facility. Currently CARA's house is functioning in a makeshift shelter and the actual facility will need great repairs and improvements to be a functioning facility again. CARA's house is a 501c3, functioning with some parish funds set aside prior to the flood, however funds are not nearly enough to repair the facility and accommodate the large influx of animals we have taken in.

All these animals will need vetting, which is another unexpected expense. We expect to not only be dealing with initial vetting, but heartworm positive dogs and a multitude of other medical issues.
CARA's house also must eventually take back some our own animals we had housed prior to the flood. This number is a little over 200 animals that were in our care. Even when our facility restored and able to accept animals, it is not nearly large enough to house all these animals.
We have decided that this amount is just a start until we can fully evaluate the damage, decide what needs to be done with the current structure and facility, and the best plan for restoring out facility. We do expect the need to be greater than this initial amount. Any help is greatly needed!
