Byron, GA - SOS!! - Little 25-pounder is very urgent!!

The Lab and her bonded Beagle brother were adopted together yesterday, so
great news to report for them!

But this little 25-pounder is very urgent in Byron, GA! She was found
running down the interstate with harness and leash attached.

She is super sweet and friendly, and is around 2-years old.

This is a tiny shelter, and she is now very urgent as they are now jammed
packed!

"They found out he was FIV+ and they were all deeply upset as everyone instantly loved him due to his playful personality and affectionate nature. I became involved when one of the techs at POP called to find out if I knew anyone who would take an FIV+ cat. The choice was up to POP to find a place for him by the end of the work day or to euthanize him. He rubbed all over the techs and purred up a storm as they went to euthanize him at 5pm - and that's when I got the call for help! He was going to Orange County Animal Services, and since he had been neutered that morning, he could be transferred to OCAS for no fee! He currently resides there and is patiently waiting to find his forever home!"

4/26/15 Why Does the United States Euthanize Cats and Dogs in Shelters? Why Can't a Prosperous Country With Leaders Who Supposedly Have Great Minds Figure a Way to Stop Killing Animals? Do You Know Who is Paying for This Ineffective and Cruel Way to Deal With Pets? You. You Pay For This as a Taxpayer.

I am pretty disgusted with the way animal shelters kill cats and dogs.  I used to be understanding about this. I still am to a point BUT the problem is that its is a problem WE have created. Yes, we have created this by our laws, our attitudes and by putting people in government positions who sorry to say have no capacity to solve problems. We  have elected officials who can't seem to solve many of society's ills by creating common sense "sane" legislature. Sometimes the solution to a problem is easy but will not be enacted because there  are many different groups of people to appease when you are a politician. It becomes accepted that some people will slip through the cracks in the medical system  (not able to get insurance), that some people who commit crimes will be pardoned because they know someone in  a position of power or the court system due to legalities let them go and that the innocent whether the poor, elderly, children and animals will be abused and discarded because they have no lobbyists in Washington or lobbyist who are not powerful enough or who are into appeasing "big business. In the end it is all about greed and money imo.

Humanity is not in a great place when it comes to kindness for all. Yes, there are many organizations and people who are kind  to those in need and try with everything they have to help others. The laws of society are often against the kindhearted who after compassion burnout often  agree that we can't save them all and spout the line about the greater good. The line about some have to be sacrificed for the greater good is BS. What it really means is that government and organizations can't figure out how to solve their problems. It is too hard for them to make any needed corrections in policy without coming up against people who do not want restrictions in their lives of any kind like say spay or neutering a pet or depriving themselves of one electronic gadget to donate money to  a cause or volunteer their time for anything.

 Our society has become so self involved with sexuality and success and images that many of  those who say they love animals do nothing to stop the shelter killings. They turn away. What can be done? Well, it is easy  for me to write that people are self centered or accept the status quo or don't care. What do I do? Not as much as I wish I could. I also  think the world is a work in progress so perhaps we can strive for better not perfect.

 I believe the first thing that needs to be done is for people to value life more than greed, to value some restrictions on choice (like MANDATORY  SPAY and NEUTER (with caveats) rather than see dogs fighting as they are dragged to the kill room or sweet innocent animals licking the hand that injects the lethal fluid. Oprah showed a euth on her show years ago. The dog was wagging his tail so happy to be with people and getting attention.

 What started me thinking about this was that dog I saw on Oprah and the series ANIMAL HOUSE I watched on Netflix. It was created by the North Shore Animal League in  N.Y. They are a wonderful organization that saves many lives.  They partner with animal control and take in dogs that are adoptable and some with medical or behaviour problems so the pets will have a second chance at life. They must take in dogs that can be adopted so dogs who show aggression or other anti social behaviours are destined to the kill room at AC unless as in one episode  AC decided to search for a rescue for a  Rottie and medical funds for a junkyard dog who had a rough life.

 But there were two dogs who were heartbreakers and the man from animal control said they did not  have the TIME or RESOURCES to help these dogs. He said one who was also picked up at the junkyard might turn around but would need a foster, training etc and they had neither so the dog and the Pitte were scheduled to be euthed. They showed the euth of the Pittie. He was on the table and the needle inserted. They did not show him die. He caused no problem.  He walked easily to the room where he would be killed. He was a good boy.

 So if there were resources and if people spayed and neutered dogs and cats, this stray Pittie who might have been dropped off at the junk yard  by an irresponsible person might never have been taken to AC. He might not have been born or he might have had a good owner and home. The other dog scheduled for euth was in the kennel, his back to the door pressing his whole body and face to the cement wall at the back of the kennel. He looked defeated , scared and depressed. He had just  struggled with AC as they tied him up and dragged him to the van and to AC. They had no choice. He could be dangerous and the workers had to protect themselves. The dog who had lived in a pack of 4 dogs in the junk yard thought he was protecting himself. People had obviously shown him no care or kindness. In away he was protecting himself from the humans that would take him to the open admissions shelter where he would be killed.

 The woman at AC who euthanized the dog in the video said she apologized to every animal whose life she took but she understood it had to be done. I understand what she said and imagine how badly she felt. The thing is in a society that valued life she would not be killing dogs at AC.

 Killing animals at shelters in large numbers is just a symptom of the  corrupted world we live in. Who creates this world, our  laws and institutions? WE DO!!!! Yes. WE DO!!! We vote people into office. We support movies and TV shows that do not promote peace.

 I encourage people to volunteer at shelters, support local shelters and rescue groups with donations and time. Contact legislators. Be an advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves. Don't accept the state of the world or the way animals are treated as the way it is. It doesn't have to be this way. We get the world we create. Seriously, there are a lot of  conflicting forces  or energies at work in our world.  Be  part of the solution  not part of the problem. Not easy but something to strive for and read

Vance's Facebook post: Hey guys, my name is Vance. I'm about 5 years old. I'm a neutered male hound mix...a good ole' country boy. I was found roaming the streets all alone when these wonderful people scooped me up. They always make sure I always have plenty to eat and drink and have a warm place to sleep. I'm available for adoption or rescue through Summers County Humane Society/ACWP in southern West Virginia. It doesn't take much to make me happy...just food in my bowl, love in my heart, and maybe some ear scratches and belly rubs. They say the quickest way to a man's heart is through his stomach...that's true for dogs too! I stay close to the house and don't wander off. There are other dogs I'm living with right now and they're all great; we love to hang out together. I've even become buddies with a potbellied pig! I like to chase the cats...but I would never hurt them, I just want them to play with me! They don't like to play - they just hiss at me and swat me on my nose...what's with that??!! I LOVE kids. Zeke came to us because his owner moved and could not take him along. He is a great little guy that is full of personality. Zeke is just the right size to take on road trips and be included in all activities. He rides well in a car and has never met a stranger. He doesn't mind cats and gets along well with all sizes of dogs.

Notes:
Ruby's foster mom says she is a "velcro girl". Ruby loves to be with her people. She is a little intimidated by strangers, but warms up to new people quickly. She is a bit overweight, but she and her foster mom are working on regaining her girlish figure. She gets along well with kids, cats and all other dogs. Ruby is well past the puppy stage and has all of the charm of a distinguished lady. Ruby is house trained. She loves attention, having her ears and belly rubbed. Ruby barks at strangers but does eventually come around and let them pet her. She doesn't roam, sticks right with her human. She's a great walking companion. Ruby is just now running and sort of playing. She doesn't play with the other dogs just us humans. Ruby is one dog that would probably love to be an only child but she gets along with all my dogs. She just doesn't engage with them. Ruby can go for long periods of time, 10 hours without a potty break. She will sleep with us as long as someone is still in bed. She would be a great protector, I believe. She is perfect, doesn't chew on anything, a great companion for long walks or lazy day on the porch.

Callie is young and happy. She is very soft and loves to give perfect little hugs and soft small kisses. She is a "hugger" in a very gentle way. Callie is often timid with people but well adjusted with other dogs. She respects cats though she is curious. It has taken Callie a while to come out of her shell but she is beautiful, smart and playful and she wants dearly to please.  She never runs away; in fact I often have to accompany her when she goes out. Callie loves our daily walks and gets a goofy smile when trying to catch frogs, chasing a ball or tossing her Teddy. She is putting on weight beautifully and may realize some day that food is no longer a scarce commodity. She has no food aggression and she is crate trained.

Notes:
Winnie is a sweetheart. She loves to snuggle up close to your neck. When she snuggles up close and sighs that deep hound dog sigh, my heart melts. Her favorite thing is to play tug of war with her doggie friends. She is house trained, good with dogs, cats, goats, sheep and kids. She has a beautiful voice, but does not bark or howl very often. She loves to run and play or snuggle on the couch Winnie is afraid of thunderstorms. The other day, she was in the kitchen with me when a loud clap of thunder sounded. She ran to our bedroom under the bed. Only thing wrong was the cat was already under the bed. Winnie was howling, cat was hissing & growling. Winnie and cat were both caught in the black fabric that covers the bottom of the box springs. I tried to get Winnie out, but she wasn't budging. I left them alone to work it out. Finally both settled down and stayed under the bed together until the storm passed. At least now I know she won't eat the cat. lol Winnie is about 3.5 yo, 45 lbs and mostly white and brown with some black.

Louise is small and slightly nervous but, very loving once she gets to know you. She gets along well with other dogs and doesn't bother cats. Louise do aspire to be a chicken killer and chases all birds (chickens, guineas etc). She loves to sit in your lap, doesn't bark much, and sleeps in crate at night. I am sure she would much rather sleep with you all night but her foster family has a full house... Louise is "Paper Trained" rather than "House Trained". We understand that works for some families.

Cisco Kid is a Red Merle ACD. When we received him, he was frightened and shy. Cisco couldn't believe humans could be so gentle with him. After a few days, wow, being petted, scratched and rubbed is the best thing ever. And toys! Cisco didn't know what to do with them. He loves a ball and squeak toys! He is learning to sit on command to wait for his food and before he can be petted. Leash training is being started. Right now being loved on and played with are "almost" better than food. I think that our cats were the first he has seen, so he was very scared at first. But now, at any chance he gets, he wants to truly "get" them. Not sure if I can change this yet. This little guy is enthusiastic about anything new now, all new experiences he takes in stride. Now that Cisco is being walked in the outside world (beyond his play yard) he wants to go and see more!

Simba has a beautiful shining black coat. He is a shy, submissive and loving guy! Simba was very scared when he first came to us. He couldn't believe humans could be so gentle with him. Thelma is a bundle of energy, gets along well with other dogs, and doesn't chase cats, but is curious. She loves to eat. Thelma has really long legs, she is beautiful. Thelma like to chase birds but she hasn't killed a chicken yet. She is Paper Trained rather than House Trained. Thelma loves to sit on your lap and cuddle or hide under your clean laundry. She sleeps in crate at night but looks forward to the day she can sleep with her own family.

Sweet Irelande is already starting to warm up to her new environment. She was introduced to the house cat and barely gave him a second look. She has also met two of the house dogs and was submissive with the big guy and friendly with the small girl. She is a good mommy and will hopefully stay in the backyard when we beginning weening her puppies. I am hoping to put a collar on her soon and also begin leash walking her. Irelande is doing very well on a leash. She has been coming in the house and seems to understand going potty outside. She has not made one mess in the house but still has not asked to go outside.
