A West Virginia Shelter with a very sad story. I am forwarding this letter that I received last night in hopes that you will send it far and wide. Surely I understand that all shelters are in need of help but this is a story that I just had to share in hopes that you will pass it on far and wide. It is from a personal friend of mine who dedicates his life to saving dogs.



Hi Cynthia. Just wondering, do you have Carla and Barry's e-mail address? I want to drop them an e-mail to see if they have any extra food. I have been working with a shelter in Welch West Virginia ( McDowell County ) that desperately could use food or anything at all for that matter. When I made that run over christmas I had to go to that shelter for Pat McCann to pick up the pups. I was able to pull a couple of adults out of there
but I just feel compelled to help them out any way I can. The shelter is run out of an old Coal Company Store that they were able to get donated to them after it had been abandoned . Definitely designed as a shelter but they are doing the best they can. They have portable kennels set up all over inside and about 30 kennels set up outside wrapped in tarps. The shelter is run by 2 women, one is 63 and suffered a major heart attack a few months ago and now has major heart problems as only half of her heart is really functioning. The other woman is 77 years old. They have no volunteers because nobody cares . When they go shopping they get ridiculed by the locals and called names. These two women are all these dogs have. They get no funding from the county, receive very little in the way of donations and they spend every penny they have on the dogs. The county's animal control consists of a couple of holding crates , a 48 hour timer, and a redneck with a shotgun and an itchy trigger finger. They spay every female dog that comes in and fully vet them. They turn them over to rescues with no pull fee, just grateful for any rescue that will help them. When i was down there they had two bags of food left and she was on her way to return food she bought for herself to get enough credit to get more dog food to get by , I gave her $100 to go buy more food and the woman broke down in tears. I leave on Friday for Ocala Florida to start my training as an Equine Dentist, figured if Carla has enough food,I could pick some up and I will re route to head to the shelter in West Virginia first to deliver food to them, they can desperately use it. I have been doing rescue for lots of years , I have been to tons of shelters in many different states, but none have touched me like this one. Their website is

The dogs on this posting are on Death Row at Liberty County Animal Control. We only have very little time, often days, to find new homes or no kill rescues. We have personally interacted with this dog. Our descriptions are straight forward! Our conscience would not allow us to hold anything back, and we would never give false information to save an animal, because it would only result in the animal being returned. You will never find vicious/dangerous animals on our listing! Usually, little or none is known about these animals' medical history. Thanks to micro chips, we do know that many of them are abandoned by military, which means they are most likely up-to-date on their shots, heart worm negative, and generally healthy; however, we cannot guarantee that, which is why each animal must receive prompt veterinary care after adoption takes place.

Spaying or neutering is a MUST!!! The following does not apply to rescues; however local adopters MUST purchase a spay/neuter voucher from us, as well as a micro chip and Rabies shot. Spay vouchers are $75 (dogs), $60 (cats) and neuter vouchers are $65 (dogs), $50 (cats). The cost for the micro chip and Rabies shot is $10 each. (If an adopter chooses to use his/her own vet for the spay/neuter, we will gladly reimburse the voucher amount upon proof from the vet’s office.)

Your help with adopting, rescuing, or fostering is immensely appreciated, as is your help with cross posting to others who may be able to help save a life.

Mommy Autumn & her babies need RESCUE!

Please have a look at this little family below. Autumn is a young girl and had 5 precious babies that are just starting to open their eyes. It will be weeks before these precious babies can be placed into homes, but Animal Control will not give weeks to this mommy, especially since she is taking up space in the Animal Control office because it is too cold outside for her babies. Autumn only weighs about 28 pounds and has medium hair. She reminds me to a larger version of the original German long haired Dachshund, like the one I was raised around. She takes very good care of her little babies and they are just adorable. There are 2 black, 1 tan, and 2 tri-colored ones. Of course there’s no telling what kind of dog the daddy was but with Mommy’s small size, hopefully, they will also be on the smaller side when fully grown. Though Autumn is very scared, she will let you pet her and let you pick up her babies, too. She does not like any other dogs near her babies however! I have never seen a new mommy who does, but it’s important to mention that. I very much fear for the life of this little family and hope that my posting goes out far and wide so the rescue wanting this little family can be found. I now there is someone out there who can help!!!

If people could only see the worth of each and every dog and cat, then shelters could be true shelters where each animal is given a chance at finding a new home no matter how long it takes. There would be no euth dates because sustaining life would be the goal. Many of us have lost our sense of gratitude for life and the wonder of each breath we take. We can get this back. We can re-create our world. I think music needs to be played in shelters. We need to stop seeing shelters as places of hopelessness.Give everyone 2 or 4 footed hope and gratitude. There are shelters striving to be No Kill. Shelby County Animal Shelter in Kentucky is one. They have a new website to promote their No-Kill vision. They are working with other groups to this end.They believe in Nathan Winograd's No Kill Solution. For those who say it is only dream I say our dreams have power and can become reality if we believe and take right action. We are inventors of our world. Hi everyone. Hope this finds each of you in good spirits and looking forward to a new year of helping save as many animals as possible and helping each other.

As most of you know, if you were able to read the email I sent out near the first of the month that we are losing our Animal Control Officer, Sandy Mallow. Due to health reasons she has had to resign as of December 31st, but will try to continue to help the animals when she can through the rescue she had started, so she would not have to euthanize after 5 days.

Sandy has dedicated her life to the animals of Pocahontas County for almost 14 years, with no shelter, no help, no volunteers but with dedication, determination and a heart of gold. It has greatly saddened her to have to resign, as it has me also, but I do realize this is something she has to do.

Sandy has around 30 cats and kittens and approximately 19 need sponsors to be spayed/neutered and their shots. 3 of those, are the ones that I have been bottle feeding for Sandy Mallow, and they are now approximately 2 1/2 months old and one is almost 3 months old. Ready for new homes or rescues.

Females to be spayed is $65 and males are $35. Rabies shot is $10. We are begging for you to help sponsor these animals as soon as possible because we do not want to have to turn them over to the Sheriffs dept or have them euthanized. However, they can not all stay in cages and must be allowed out.

If you can find it in your heart to even partially sponsor one, please help the animals. They will be kept, once sponsored, until a home or rescue is found. Sandy will be taking a huge pay cut and will no longer be able to help the amount she has before with feed, vet care, etc. Please help the animals that are still with her. They honestly need you. You may also call the vet and sponsor one via credit card after you let us know which one you are wanting to help, or you can donate by using paypal on our main page.

The name on our petfinder site will be changed after December 31st to "LAST CHANCE ANIMAL RESCUE" instead of "Pocahontas County Animal Control". Will update more when I can about the changes.
