5/24/11 Friends of Screven County Animals - Rescue Group Saving Dogs and Cats in Georgia

This is the response from Sharon (who is actively involved with this rescue) when I asked her "If people want to adopt animals from the shelter and don't live in the area can your group help?"

"We'd love to help! Our website is http://www.friendsofscrevencountyanimals.org/ or you can get in touch with us through Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Friends-of-Screven-County-Animals/372937163322?sk=info- we've been around for two years, and we've been working with other groups as well as the shelter administration to get as many animals as possible out so that the animal control officer won't have to put them down when the shelter gets too full. Our problem has always been too many animals, not enough adopters, so pulling an animal who's got a home to go to already is fine with us!"

5/22/11 SHELBY COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY KY " WHERE LOVE IS A FOUR LEGGED WORD. We do not receive any outside funding and survive only on donations." This group saves so many lives. Please consider donating.

I am crossposting this. This group has saved so many lives. Please consider making a donation.

SHELBY COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY
WHERE LOVE IS A FOUR LEGGED WORD
We want to thank you for helping to support the Shelby County Humane Society. We do not receive any outside funding and survive only on donations from wonderful people like you!  We would like you to meet just a tiny portion of the animals that you have helped so far this year.
Meet Jasper
This little cutie was only a few days old when he was turned into an animal control facility. Donations provided Jasper with puppy milk, vaccines, worm medicine, flea treatment, neuter, and micro chip so that Jasper can now find his new forever home.
Every dollar donated goes towards antibiotics, vaccines, food, medical care, and daily support of these and many more homeless animals.
Meet Blessing
Blessing was found injured and in pain, but the people that found her could get no help. Many people began searching for somebody to help this baby and when we got the call we agreed to immediately take her. Her front leg was broken and she had torn ligaments and tendons in one back leg. Your donations provided her with x-rays, pain medications, antibiotics, vaccines, a warm safe place to heal, spay, flea treatment, worming, and micro chip.
This is Blessing today ready for her new forever home
Every morsel of food, every bag of cat litter,  every gallon of bleach, every ounce of laundry soap and all cleaning supplies that are donated are used and so much appreciated!
Meet Twist
Twist is a five week old Beagle baby that has deformed front legs. This baby boy has the hope of a good future but is going to require lots of rehab and surgery when he gets a little older. He is such a sweet and happy little boy and with your support we won't give up on him!
We are "NO KILL" and every animal in our program is loved, cared for and supported for the remainder of their natural life.
Meet a special litter of kittens
Three of the five babies had umbilical cords wrapped so tightly around one of their back legs that it caused amputation. They were only a couple of days old when they came to us and were in need of immediate care.
They have been with us for a week are doing fantastic!  They are responding well to antibiotics, eating like crazy, and starting to walk. We will have to wait until they are a little bigger to see if surgery is going to be required but we expect them to have a very good future.
Like every one else, the economic crisis has hit us very very hard. We are struggling just to provide the basic daily needs for our animals. It is with a broken heart that we are turning more and more needy animals away from our door because we can not financially support them.
Meet a couple of our happy, healthy, adoptable kids!
Quincy
Quincy is a 12 week old long haired chihuahua that was rescued from life in a rabbit cage outside in the pouring rain. He's ready for his new forever home!
June Bug
June Bug survived a house fire and has lived at the Kitty Cottage for three years while she waits for adoption.

Belle, like so many bunnies, was an Easter present with no forethought to how much care and love that she would require. She is waiting for her new loving home.
This is who we are and this is what we do but we can't do it with out YOU! Many of you are not able to do the daily work but you are still vitally important to our survival. You may not see every face, hear every whimper, or help clean the wounds but you are just as important as those of us who do. Shelby County Humane Society is not made up of a few people, it is every single supporter and donor. You are SCHS and all of these animals owe their lives to each of you. Thank you so much for everything that you do and can continue to do in the future. We are all needed now, more than ever.
Thank you
The animals of Shelby County Humane Society
All donations are tax deductible.
If you would like to make a monetary donation please follow the Paypal link below.
Donated supplies can be left at PetSMart  (4601 Outer Loop) or the Kitty Cottage (40 7th St.) in Shelbyville.
If you need any assistance or have any questions please call (502)633-4033 or (502)220-2014. Thank you!

The director for the Screven County Animal Control shelter in Sylvania, GA, had a heart attack and the shelter is under temporary management and is short staffed currently.  Their hours of operation have been cut short and adoptions have dropped.  Hardly any rescues pull from here.  A local veterinarian was called in to euthanize many, but he called GARD instead to see if the rescue community could help first.  GARD pulled 34 dogs on 4/28/11. If you can take some of these dogs, GARD will pull them for you and transport them to the Northeastern US for free.  The vet will do rabies shots and health certificates for free.  The link below shows pictures of the dogs from 4/28/11.  Please respond to this email with the number for the dog(s) you are interested in and we will make arrangements for transport.  THIS IS URGENT THAT WE ACT QUICKLY NOW.

This is a VERY urgent situation.  We have given all puppies first vaccines and are quarantining them now.  Adults can be killed anytime.  We have a great vet working with us.  This shelter is only open a couple of hours each week and so getting in to these animals is very difficult. We are meeting with the Commissioners to ask them to change hours and work with rescues.  This is a very rural area and they have a 98% kill rate. We can help pull and transport and arrange vetting for any of these animals.  Please crosspost!!!!   We do not have much time.
We did pull the mother that day with the prolasped uterus and our vet did an emergency c section on her.  She and puppies are doing great but it was touch and go for awhile with mom.  She is at a loving foster home and is recovering.

5/17/11 Dogs and Cats In Need on Posts Without Dates

I received an e-mail from a lady who saw a dog she was interested in in an older post that had no date in the post  heading.  There was a period of time when the blogger date function did not work on the blog and I didn't know how to fix it. Not thinking these undated posts would be accessible to readers or not thinking in general, I didn't add a date manually. I want you to know if you see a blog post that is undated it is at least a year or more old. Many of the animals are no longer available I imagine especially if they were at kill shelters but you can always call or e-mail if there is a number especially if the dog or cat was at a no kill shelter. Life can take many turns so you never know. It is always worth a call. Life  can be synchronistic  What if the dog or cat was adopted and years later returned. It does happen.  And at that moment you found his or her picture on the Internet on a  blog like mine and called and the rest is magic, you were meant to be together.

Update 5/13/11 5/8/11 Video by Pet Owner in Japan Pleading for the Government to Get Pets Out of Closed Evacuation Zone-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0frBRQ_ndls&feature=player_embedded

I had to post this. It shows how many countries need to create plans to evacuate pets and farm animals when disaster strikes. I read the government is going to do domestic animal rescue but not until the middle of May. Hope this is true. It needs to be done now. Animals are starving.

5/4/1 Pregnant Lab Mix Needs Funds for C Section. She is having 14!!! puppies. Also Need Bottle Feeding Fosters Gastonia NC area.

CROSS POSTING – PLEASE SHARE!!!

CONTACT FOR BOTTLE FEEDERS: Vikki Passino at vikki4fsu@msn.com
Chelsea is with Vikki Pasino in Gastonia, NC now.  She was rescued out of Liberty County Animal Control last Sunday - very, very pregnant and already classified as a Senior. :-(  I had the amazing pleasure of having her at my home for a few days before she went on to her foster home in Gastonia, NC.  Chelsea took my heart in no time with her wonderful ways…  She is so docile and loving and so happy for every kind word and touch.  I used to lay down on her bed with her and she would cuddle as close as she could to me.  We went on slow, peaceful walks and she appreciated my neighbors doting on her and, while I chatted with them, she’d just relax in the grass in a shady spot.  She is emaciated and it seems that she has not had a good life at all.  I don’t know how anyone could let this sweet girl go…

Unfortunately, most likely due to her age, there are complications and poor Chelsea needs a C-Section.  The vet says she does not have any muscle mass in her lower body to help her push the babies out.  We already know that Chelsea is going to have 14 babies, that’s if all of them survive.  Chelsea will not have enough milk to feed all of those babies and since her foster mom works out of the house, we are also in desperate need of bottle feeding fosters in the Gastonia, NC area for some of these babies.

Please share this chipin and help with donations if you can. So far, there are only $20 in it. :-( Let me know if you have any questions please.  Also, if you would rather make a direct donation to the vet, it is The Pet Hospital In Bessemer City, NC at 704.629.5390.  Just state that it is for Chelsea on Vikki Passino’s account.

Many blessings to all of you who will actually read this and forward/donate/PRAY for Chelsea.

5/2/11 Rescuer's House Burnt Down. He Needs Help With Gentle Rescued Dog Angel Who Has a Heart Problem. She Survived Fire. Her Will to Live is Strong. Please Donate for Her Medical Care. Chris Says"She loves life. She loves people and all living things. She lights up a room just being there. Maybe Angel is like children that don't live long... they are too good to stay on this Earth very long."

Subject: Angel's heart surgery

http://angelheartsurgery.chipin.com/angels-heart-surgery

Angel came to us one night.
She was young but starving, covered in wounds and missing fur. She was dripping blood.
And she was smiling, wagging her tail and so incredibly happy.

Her injuries were so severe we thought she was a bait dog.
But Dr. LeClear at Shores Animal Hospital (phone: 352-372-8387) told us it was severe road rash.
The vet said she was likely thrown from a moving vehicle.
Maybe from the back of a pickup truck?

And then the vet found her heart defect.
Its called PDA... Patent Ductus Arteriosus.
PDA is a congenital heart defect. Angel was born with a hole between the chambers of her heart.
Instead of a heartbeat, when you listen to her heart it sounds like a washing machine.

PDA severity is measured on a scale from 1 to 6.
Angel's PDA is 6 out of 6.... the worst possible.
You can feel her heart banging on her side like a motor with a thrown rod.
Despite this, and to the vets great surprise, Angel is playful and active! Nothing, not even this terrible defect can keep her incredible spirit down.

But the sad truth is that soon, maybe in a year or less, Angel is going to experience congestive heart failure and slowly die.
Who would adopt a dog that was just going to die? No one. So I decided to give her the best life she could have in the time she had left in this world and I took her in as my own.
And then, just three weeks later, my house burned down and was completely destroyed... you can read about it here.

http://www.ocala.com/article/20110321/ARTICLES/110329946
(Angel is in front of me in the picture)

Seven dogs were inside. They were quickly asphyxiated from the smoke. My friend and I ran back inside to rescue them but failed. Gainesville Fire Rescue arrived and brought them out, and brought all of them back to life except one... Mogley died.
Despite Angel's heart, she was resuscitated and to everyone's amazement, recovered faster than any of the others.

Angel is so very kind and gentle. She loves life. She loves people and all living things. She lights up a room just being there. Maybe Angel is like children that don't live long... they are too good to stay on this Earth very long.

University of Florida School of Veterinary Medicine says they can perform the surgery that would save her life.... for $1,700.
But... I lost everything I had and can't afford the surgery and I need your help. Please help Angel live!

She has come too far and through so much, she is too good and kind of a living being to have her short life taken by her heart defect.

Should Angel recover, because of her kind and gentle temperament and incredible will to live, it is our goal to help Angel become a therapy dog for children born with birth defects, and serve in Shands Hospital in Gainesville Florida.

Can you please help give Angel a second chance at life?
Even the smallest donation helps!
