9/1/16"In August 2016, Ascension Parish and surrounding areas experienced record breaking floods.Right now CARA's house is caring for 180+ stray animals brought in as a result of the flood. Animals have continued to be surrendered daily. Many will likely not be reclaimed due to owners not looking for them, unable to find them, or just physically unable to take them back due to homelessness. All these animals will need vetting, which is another unexpected expense. We expect to not only be dealing with initial vetting, but heartworm positive dogs and a multitude of other medical issues.. "In August 2016, Ascension Parish and surrounding areas experienced record breaking floods.  As a result, CARA's House shelter was flooded and displaced to a temporary holding facility.  Currently CARA's house is functioning in a makeshift shelter and the actual facility will need great repairs and improvements to be a functioning facility again.  CARA's house is a 501c3, functioning with some parish funds set aside prior to the flood, however funds are not nearly enough to repair the facility and accommodate the large influx of animals we have taken in.

Right now CARA's house is caring for 180+ stray animals brought in as a result of the flood.  Animals have continued to be surrendered daily.  Many will likely not be reclaimed due to owners not looking for them, unable to find them, or just physically unable to take them back due to homelessness.  All these animals will need vetting, which is another unexpected expense.  We expect to not only be dealing with initial vetting, but heartworm positive dogs and a multitude of other medical issues.

CARA's house also must eventually take back some our own animals we had housed prior to the flood.  This number is a little over 200 animals that were in our care.  Even when our facility restored and able to accept animals, it is not nearly large enough to house all these animals.

We have decided that this amount is just a start until we can fully evaluate the damage, decide what needs to be done with the current structure and facility, and the best plan for restoring out facility.  We do expect the need to be greater than this initial amount.  Any help is greatly needed!
