THIS IS THE END OF THE ROAD FOR THIS SWEET GIRL - THERE HAVE BEEN NO OFFERS AT ALL FOR HER AND THE FACILITY IS OVER FULL...  EUTHANASIA IS THIS WEEK!

This sweetheart of a girl is located in a very nasty, rural Animal Control facility in Hinesville, GA. It is clear to see that she once had a family... Her coat is healthy and she is a bit on the chubby side. We can't be sure if her family actually cared about her and she somehow got away and they don't know what happened to her, or if they fed her treats instead of spending time with her. Nevertheless, she is a lover and is very confused about her current state. Though she is a little heavier, she is full of energy, loves children and adults alike and gets along fine with other dogs, too. She would be best around older children because she may knock small children down in all of her excitement.  Her age is estimated around 4 years old.  Dogs like her don't often make it out of places like these... If nobody comes forward to save her within the next few days, she will die via heartstick... and her body will end up in a landfill. This is the cold hard truth and nothing but. PLEASE, someone save this wonderful girl. She belongs in a family where she will be cherished and be given the chance to live out her years.

Subject: NYC gentle senior cat-teeth pulled out-NEEDS FOSTER ASAP

Hi, I occassionally get involved with helping vulnerable animals.  There is no more vulnerable sweetheart who has crossed my path in recent times than HAPPY, who has no reason to be happy at the moment.  PLEASE, HELP me and Happy by sending this to literally everyone you know.  I will rent a car & bring him anywhere there is a good home (or foster)!  Thanks, Jennifer
CONTACT:  kjsnapp@hotmail.com    pic's below of SWEET HAPPY after teeth pulled out!

Happy:                                                                                                                                                                             February 2011, I took an unexpected trip to the vet when my owner wanted me euthanized.  My family dumped me after 15 long years because they were moving to Ohio from New Jersey two days later.  The vet refused to euthanize me.  Part of the reason was because other than some rotten teeth, I’m in GREAT shape for a fella my age.
I am living in a small cage at the vet and cannot stay for more than a couple of days longer.  I am a sweetheart of a guy even after having 8 rotten teeth pulled out of my mouth yesterday (Tuesday, 2/22/11) morning.  No matter how much pain I am in, I always have a purr for the staff even as they administer my pain pills.
No-kill shelters will not take a 15 year-old cat like me and while I am not enjoying life in a cage even that luxury is ending in a couple of days.  After expiring all of my options in the two weeks since my owners moved away, my living situation is more and more precarious by the hour.  PLEASE FOSTER ME EVEN FOR A SHORT PERIOD if you can't provide me with my forever home.  I lived with another cat most of my life, and I like older kids.  I even get along with some dogs.
P.S. My profile pictures were taken the evening after my dental procedure.  I was still groggy resulting in my pupils being dilated.  When you meet me you will see my eyes are not dark as they appear in the photos, but are a beautiful shade of yellow/orange like the color of a tropical sun setting over the horizon.

UPDATE 2/23/11   This sweet girl is at shelter and very much in need. She is not safe.

"Meike is very good at returning calls if they go into her voice mail.  She's also excellent at updating all of her FB postings. - I saw where one lady on Lab Forum said the FB page is never updated...  Could you please let them know that she IS still in need and in MUCH danger at this point and to call Meike at 912-610-4239 and leave a message.  She is bombarded with calls every day; therefore, they have to leave a message if they get her voice mail.

2/13/11 Shelter Dogs and Cats on this Blog

I've received several anonymous e-mails updating some of the blog posts from last year. I want to thank the person or persons who sent them. I also want to let readers know that  most of these dogs and cats are in kill shelters and or in immediate danger of being euthed.  Most of these animals do not  have long to live unless they are at shelters like Grayson in Ky or Shelby Cty Animal Shelter in Ky (and others I cannot recall now that do their best to never euth an animal). If you see a dog or cat you are interested in please contact the shelter or pound. Realize though that  after a year in many cases the animal will not be there. They have been adopted, rescued or euthed. Pounds and shelters often euth weekly and although  it is possible a dog or cat may be there after one or 2 years it is highly unlikely unless they have a foster program or are  a non-kill facility. Many shelters and pounds listed on this blog do not  have the resources to keep these precious animals indefinitely.  It never hurts to call the pound or shelters about a dog or cat seen on this blog.

If you click on a shelter link you are often taken to the shelter's website where you can see the dogs and cats who are there now. Please do that. When you click on the Petfinder link, if it is in the post, you also can see the dogs and cats in need today if the shelter or pound updates their listing. So there are two ways to find who is at the shelter. Also contacting an e-mail link in the post can be a source to find out who is in need.

804-4251 - Miles is one of the most beautiful Yellow Labs you will ever see. He is only about 1-2 years old and is heart worm negative. He is VERY sweet but is unsure about the whole shelter situation and does not do good around other dogs at this point - We don't know if it's the environment or if he was just never properly socialized. Funny thing is, he loves cats! It seems to us that he was probably purchased from a breeder as a puppy and only grew up around cats. We had a one-dog-home for him but unfortunately, the adopter backed out last minute. That puts Miles in a very dangerous situation, as we now have to scramble to find someone quickly who can save his life. Please, please have a second and third look at this boy... He is a wonderful dog, just does not know how to get along with the other K-9's at the moment.."

ADOPTION: If you are wishing to adopt an angel in need, please request an adoption application from the shelter via email. Please include the identification number of the dog or cat and not just name alone. Completed applications are faxed back to the shelter for the approval process. Please be patient during this time - approved adopters will be contacted once it is completed. Full veterinary services and boarding are available at Four Paws Veterinary Hospital and transport of the animal to the hospital is arranged.

GA AND OUT-OF-STATE RESCUE: Please contact the Barrow officers for specific information. Approved GA licensed rescues can pull animals free of charge with the veterinary care being the responsibility of the rescue. At this time, the shelter does not have specific out-of-state transport help, but may be able to assist with local, short distance transport if needed and the volunteers are available to do so.

TRANSPORT FOR OUT OF STATE ADOPTERS AND RESCUES: Transport is the responsibility of the adopter/rescue respectively. At this time, the shelter does not have specific transport help. There are multiple resources available for this and please ask those involved in the rescue community for recommendations and references if needed. Barrow Buddies can send you a list of resources if you request this via email to the site.

Please be patient when awaiting a response – while the officers work hard to place the animals in need, they additionally have multiple duties to attend to for the citizens and animals of Barrow County as well as the care of the shelter animals – all of which are first and foremost. Though the officers make every reasonable attempt to answer inquiries/questions, please know that they can do so as time allows. All adoption/rescue requests for the animals in need will be acknowledged.

CATS: The adoption fee for any cat is $100. The fee includes: spay or neuter, physical exam, fecal exam, deworming, rabies vaccine, distemper vaccine, and microchip. For licensed Georgia rescues there is no charge to pull a cat, but no veterinary services come with the cat. Out of state rescues, please contact us for details. *LAST DAY means the date the cat is scheduled for euthanasia. If we have a cat posted whose last day has passed, that cat should be considered extremely urgent. Please call about those cats immediately as they may be subject to euthanasia at any time. We remove postings on available cats when they leave the building or their adoption has been completed. If you are a rescuer who has spoken for a cat or a person with an adoption application on a cat, do not take offense. We have had rescues and adoptions fall through in the past and we work hard to make sure no cat falls through the cracks.

DOGS: The adoption fee for all dogs is $100. The fee includes: Spay or neuter, physical exam, fecal exam, deworming, rabies vaccine, distemper/parvo vaccine, and microchip. For licensed Georgia rescues there is no charge to pull a dog, but no veterinary services come with the dog. Out of state rescues, please contact us for details. *LAST DAY means the date the dog is scheduled for euthanasia. If we have a dog posted whose last day has passed, that dog should be considered extremely urgent. Please call immediately about those dogs as they may be subject to euthanasia at any time. IF YOU WISH TO SAVE AN ANIMAL IN NEED - PLEASE DON’T DELAY! Contact the shelter as early as possible to begin adoption/rescue preparations. Euthanization typically is on Wednesday mornings and Barrow is closed to the public. Contacting the shelter NO LATER THAN 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday is in the best interest of the animals as it allows sufficient time to make adoption or rescue preparations without risk of last-minute issues. The shelter makes every available effort for the animals, but they need your timely and respectful cooperation to continue these efforts. Wednesday: please email the Barrow Co. officers BEFORE 8:30 AM if an animal is still in need of rescue.

SPONSORSHIP TO HELP THE ANIMALS IN NEED is greatly appreciated. If you wish to sponsor one of the animals, please send an email to the Barrow Buddies site stating who you wish to sponsor, the amount as well as your email contact. The sponsorship list is compiled and the information will be forwarded to the shelter. Sponsorships will be added to the pleas of the animals in need. They are meant as ‘pledges’ only for future donations to the approved rescue that pulls the animal(s) to assist with their medical needs.

UPDATES FOR THE ANIMALS will be done as information is available and time permits for the officers!

THE WONDERFUL PHOTOS of the animals in need are done by Gayla of Barrowbuddies. She takes time in her busy life each week to do this and is a true blessing to the Barrow animals.

WHAT ARE THE HOURS? Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays – CLOSED to the public (but they can still correspond on Wednesdays); other week days – OPEN 8-5. Call ahead before coming out around holidays.

The shelter is always in need of kitty litter and other items (towels, cardboard boxes that hold a case of drinks, chewy dog treats, etc. PLEASE DONATE IF YOU CAN!

2/5/11 American Bulldog Mix. Kingwood WV. RESCUE ONLY. Volunteers WILL HELP with Vetting and Transport. The shelter is closed until Tuesday 2/8, so please e-mail wvsher@yahoo.com if you are interested in this unfortunate boy. He is scheduled for euthansia Tuesday morning. Please crosspost!"

"This dog is at animal control in Kingwood, WV. He is approximately 5 years old, not neutered, needs medical attention for a skin condition (there is no vet at the shelter, so we don't know what is wrong -- could be anything from a flea allergy to mange), ...is timid around new people and seems generally not well socialized (though he does walk well on leash). He was found as a stray, so there is no background information on him. Not sure of his breed, but he looks like an American Bulldog mix. He has a large head and chest and narrower hindquarters. He weighs approximately 65-70 lbs. and probably should gain 10 lbs. or more. He has warmed up to the ACO. He seems to have little interest in other dogs and does not seem to be aggressive toward them (through kennel wire), but we are not sure how he would react to dogs being very friendly or aggressive toward him. He is not up for adoption, but the ACO has agreed to allow him to be rescued if any rescue out there would want to give him a chance. He needs a rescue that can take care of his medical needs and place him in an environment where he can be evaluated and hopefully socialized, trained, and be made ready for adoption. We have volunteers that can help with getting him to a vet and help with transport. The shelter is closed until Tuesday 2/8, so please e-mail wvsher@yahoo.com if you are interested in this unfortunate boy. He is scheduled for euthansia Tuesday morning. Please crosspost!"
