5/21 Herbie has HW WAS ADOTPED

PLEASE HELP US COMPLETE THIS MIRACLE…

I know that many of you worried about Herbie, the Love Bug, as time was coming to an end and he was “slated for death” this morning. Well, God has answered our (and your) prayers. Herbie has found a home and was picked up yesterday! I am certain that this miracle happened due to the heartwarming story that Erin wrote about Herbie. You can read it below and believe me when I say that it will be hard to read without a tear or two streaming down your cheeks. Herbie’s new dad called me on their way home and told me that Herbie was lying in the front seat with his head resting in his lap. I can’t tell you how overwhelmingly happy it made me to picture this scene.

Unfortunately, we also found out that Herbie is heartworm positive because we tested him before his new dad arrived. We feared the test results, but I had already promised Herbie’s family that I would raise funds if need be to get Herbie all better again because they have enough money to take care of Herbie but not enough to afford heartworm treatment. I have a wonderful vet who does the treatment at a great discount for the animals we rescue, but nevertheless I need to raise the funds to even pay the discounted amount.

Please, every amount, no matter how small, is greatly appreciated. Donations can be made via PayPal to pbrooks@scad.edu or directly to the vet clinic. Please contact me at scanimalrescue@gmail.com for more information.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

Death Sentence for Senior without Family in Liberty County, GA

Location: Hinesville; Liberty County, GA

Right outside of Ft. Stewart and less than an hour South of Savannah

Most of us have had what are referred to as “senior moments”. We grunt when we sit, our bones pop as we stretch, we forget simple things, etc. We laugh and tease each other about it, but for some, having senior moments is no laughing matter. Let’s turn our focus to Herbie.

Herbie is a sweet and outgoing guy who loves to socialize, but he has no family left. Unable to care for himself and without the money to pay for his own expenses or rights to protect him, his care has been turned over to the county.

Unfortunately, his living conditions are mediocre and socialization is minimal. Herbie loves when staff comes to bring him his meals, but they never stay as long as he would like for them to. Occasionally, a volunteer might spend a few moments with him and he brightens up, but that too never lasts.

A brunette with strands of gray in his facial hair, Herbie’s age is apparent at first glance, but spend some time with him and the extra years seem to fade away. He becomes playful and his brown eyes glisten with good humor. Like most adult males, he is still just a boy at heart.

Herbie isn’t in assisted living. He is in a cage at animal control.

He is a 7-8 year old black lab mix with the spirit of life strong inside of him even though he is scheduled to be euthanized on Thursday, May 21st.

It will happen early in the day. An animal control officer will walk to his cage to get him and Herbie will smile and wag his tail with excitement to see them. When he is taken out of his kennel and walked inside, Herbie will be filled with excitement at the extra special treat. He will wonder if it is finally his day to go home.

Then Herbie will be held down. He will be confused, but will not fight. He will trust his human caretakers because he would do anything for them. With that trust and perhaps a final wag of the tail, that lively spirit and sparkle of the eye will be taken from him by the point of a needle. Herbie’s senior moment will be his death. His complete trust and desire for acceptance will be repaid by an ultimate betrayal.

Heartbroken, the animal control officer will then have the task of putting his lifeless body into a freezer with other corpses of creatures who were killed because they had no one to take care of them. A truck will come and they will all be disposed of as garbage.

My mother is a senior citizen now. Some people think that come that age, the best years are behind you. But I don’t see that with her. Her youngest child has bought her first house and is due to move out, allowing our mother the ability to begin a new chapter in her life. Her hair is all white now and when I visited her just recently, she looked so tiny, like age had caused her to shrink. My mother isn’t going to sit in a rocking chair and wait for the end to come. Instead, she is sitting on a sofa in California, recovering from cosmetic surgery. She is asking me about match making websites and saying that she is ready to go out and find a sugar daddy!

Being a senior citizen does not have to mean that you are at the end. It can mean a brand new beginning. We as humans have the ability to give that good fortune to the other creatures that we share our environment with. Somebody could do that for Herbie. Consider this post his matchmaking entry and you, his potential sugar daddy/sugar mama.

Herbie is neutered and gets along splendidly with other dogs. He is currently kept with two other males and none of them fight, but they do play. He is docile and always has a smile and wiggle of the butt to offer. Although usually quite calm, he can get spunky in playful moments. Herbie has already gone through his chewing phase. Now an older guy, that won’t be an issue for him. He would make a great loving companion for kids to look back and remember when they are older as having been one of their best friends. He won’t jump up on the little ones or knock them over, but he will nap with them if allowed. He isn’t likely to destroy the house while you are away for the day. He is much more likely to be snoring in the living room and saving up all of his energy to greet you when you walk back in the door.

Please help the dogs who didn't get a home or rescue this week.

Bowser, the Black Labrador puppy (4 months) VIDEO!!!

Last week we had Trina and this week we have Bowser. He could be Trina’s brother because he is just as gorgeous and just as energetic. He has tons of kisses for everyone and loves the water like he should. His coat is shiny and very healthy looking and his brown eyes are made for melting the strongest hearts. He loves being around other dogs and has no shyness toward people what so ever. He enjoys running, fetching and playing and would be best in a family with young kids because they could tire each other out. We were very lucky to find a home for Trina in Maryland last week. I hope that Bowser will be just as lucky.

ELMO, the Basset Hound mix (1 year) VIDEO!!!

Elmo is our cutest little wiggle worm. I wished there was a way to literally show everyone what an adorable little ham he is. Elmo is a high Basset mix and has the wonderful personality to go along with that breed. He is very happy as long as he can be around people or other dogs. When we had him in the field with a very frightened little Boston Terrier mix he was so careful as not to scare her but when we encouraged him to play with us he rough housed like he’s an expert at it. He has the most adorable fat little paws and floppy ears and just loves everyone. He came in with a harness on but nobody has come to claim him… He has a flea allergy and will need to be on Frontline or Advantage immediately as the itching is really causing him discomfort. I can’t imagine anyone not falling in love with him once they meet him.

DIDDY, the Pit Bull Terrier mix puppy (8 weeks old) VIDEO!!!

Do I really have to write many words about this little baby to reach out to you for help? Shouldn’t the pictures alone tug at your heart strings? They sure do on mine, as I have met and held this little boy myself and wanted to cry knowing what his fate could be. There are already tiny baby puppy bodies lying in the freezer at Animal Control, please don’t let Diddy’s be the next. He is so precious; loves being held and already knows how to give slobbery puppy kisses.

Mojo, the Yellow Labrador mix (2 years) NEUTERED and UTD on shots! VIDEO!!!

Mojo’s life started out fine but had a turn for the worse when a set of heartworm tests accidentally got switched. The no-kill shelter is located next door to Animal Control and they pull the animals from there. They heartworm test and if they test positive they return the dog because they can’t afford to pay for treatment. They picked Mojo and Rover and returned Rover, letting us know that Rover is positive. They had Mojo neutered and brought up to date on shots. In the meantime, our kennel tech decided to retest Rover because she had a gut feeling that he was not positive, as there was no coughing or exhaustion. When Rover’s test came back negative she alerted the no-kill shelter staff who retested Mojo and unfortunately his came back positive, which made it clear that the tests must have accidentally been switched. PLEASE don’t let the heartworm results be a death sentence for this boy. There MUST be a reason why this happened. Mojo is a beautiful dog with a great temperament and lot’s of energy. Just think of it like this, yes, you have to pay for heartworm treatment, but you don’t have to pay for the shots and neuter anymore, as all of that has already been done. If you are in the Hinesville area I can even help you get the treatment at a reduced cost. PLEASE contact us to save Mojo!

RESCUED!!!ROVER, the Heinz 57! (2 years old) (Rover is HW negative!) VIDEO!!!

ROVER WAS RETESTED FOR HEARTWORMS AND CAME UP NEGATIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mistakes happen all the time, but when they endanger the life of an animal it's all the more tragic. We had many people ask about Rover but they all decided to adopt another pet when they were told that he was heartworm positive. Somehow we knew there had to have been a mistake with Rover's initial heartworm test because Rover did not show any of the obvious signs of a heartworm positive dog; therefore, we decided to test him ourselves. We could not have been happier when the result was NEGATIVE! Wont you please come out and meet Rover before it's too late - he has dodged euthanasia several times now, which is a miracle in itself.

This is what I initially had to say about Rover: My name is Rover and I’m just a lover of people and other furry friends. I’m not very big and I was told my red coat is very handsome. I don’t know why and how I came here but I have one main objective and that is to find a forever family. I am sure there must be someone out there who is looking for a boy like me; a family who does not have any specific breed requirements and who just wants a nice young boy who is loving with their children and other pets, who loves to play and romp and at the same time just enjoys relaxing on the couch with a nice raw hide bone. I promise that I will never cause you any problems and that I will always listen to you. I am scared in this place and yesterday, for the first time this week, I felt loved again when some nice people showed up and paid me some much needed attention. Can you see by looking at my face how much I enjoyed their attention? I felt like I was on Cloud Nine but that too passed and I had to go back into my lonely cell again with the other boy I’m housed with. When the cell gate was closed it was very depressing and I am beginning to wonder if I’ll ever get out of here…

RETURNED TO OWNER!MARLA, the Senior Chocolate Lab mix (7-8 years) VIDEO!!!

Marla is a very sweet and loving older lady. It is clear to see that all she wants is a home to relax in and get the loving and tender care she so deserves. She is on the hefty side and is therefore a little slow, but she is an expert at sitting on your feet and letting you adore her as she adores you. It breaks my heart to see such a sweet older dog at Animal Control because I know her chances are very slim as most people want puppies and younger adults but I hope and pray that there is someone out there who knows that Marla deserves to live out her life in a loving home rather than end up in a freezer box. She does not have a mean bone in her body and loves everyone, be it humans or other animals. If you are a lover of senior dogs or if Marla’s pictures speak to your heart, please contact me before it’s too late.

MILO, the Labrador/Shepherd mix (4 years old)

So I found out more information on Milo and I hate that this is coming after my initial mailing; however, it needs to be told and people who second guess it can call Liberty County Animal Control to confirm it because I don't want anyone thinking that I made this up to get him rescued or to raise funds. I work full-time and never get to meet the dogs until the weekend and then I often don't get to speak to the officer who brought in a dog. This time the kennel tech did not even know until after the fact that Milo's story was much worse than we initially thought. See, there IS family in Hinesville who could have taken Milo after his original owner died. In fact, they are the ones who alerted Animal Control that the old man died and left animals behind that needed to be picked up from the property. When animal control officers arrived on the property way out in the country they found a back yard with hogs, chicken and other farm animals, all living in total filth. They found a Chow mix who was kept in a RABBIT HUTCH. He was totally unsocialized and had to be killed immediately. They said that it seems he had never been out of that hutch and he was malnourished and living in his own excrement. They found Milo tied to the bumper of a rusty old truck in the woods on that property. A week after they picked up Milo they were told that there had been a third dog. When they went back that third dog had died. When I first looked at Milo I thought that he had the look of a dog that should be much larger but here he only weighs about 40 pounds. I believe his growth was stunned due to being tied up all the time and not being fed regularly. Honestly, it is beyond us that he is no aggressive and is so nice with the other dogs. He is housed with a senior Black Lab mix and a red Heinz 57 right now and all of them get along splendidly. The kennel tech tells me that he is actually HAPPY at Animal Control! Can you imagine how sad a dogs life must have been for that dog to be HAPPY at a high-kill facility???!!! Of course it's because we all love Milo - even before we knew how bad his life had been we loved him. We give him as much attention as we can and he is growing on us more and more. It makes things even harder because even though we have been told that we can keep him there a little longer, as we refer to him as our "special case," the fact that his hip is hurt is not helping matters none. We had him at the vet last week to get his leg looked at and found out that it actually is his hip. We would love to get an X-Ray done to know more but truly don't have the funds. And what if he needs surgery, we surely don't have the funds for that either. There is a wonderful foster home for him in Pennsylvania but they don't have the funds for more than regular vetting and neuter. Can anyone please help us get this boy out of there? Donations can be sent to pbrooks@scad.edu which is my PayPal account or to Dr. Beatie at Beatie Animal Clinic in Hinesville, GA: 912-368-4080. If you donate directly to Dr. Beatie please let his office staff know it's for Milo and will go on Petra Brook's rescue account.

Here is the original posting once more and there's video of him playing with Herbie and Rover, too:

Milo- Euth date not set yet

is a heartbreaker for sure. He was not a stray dog nor was he dropped off by strangers who claimed to have found him. Milo’s owner died. He was old and died and left Milo behind with no family to care for him. So now Milo is forced to stay in a cell in a high-kill animal control facility and wait for his own death day to come. To make matters worth Milo hurt one of his hind legs; it appears to be a slipped knee. He runs with it and lies down on it but it is clear to see that it is causing him discomfort. My brain is telling me that Milo may not make it out of here under the circumstances, but my heart is telling me that God can’t let this be the end for him. He is such a loving and sweet dog. He enjoys and even seeks out the company of other dogs and is very gentle. He is a skinny little thing and when you meet him you can’t help but love him. A family actually looked at him this past weekend but they were so concerned about his leg that they felt they may not be able to take on the responsibility of vetting him. Please, here is a beautiful soul that just wants to be given a chance. Please, please give Milo the chance he so desperately needs

LIBERTY COUNTY ANIMAL CONTROL – HINESVILLE, GEORGIA

If you would like to adopt one of the animals below, please contact

Petra at scanimalrescue@gmail.com

I have personally interacted with each one of these dogs. My descriptions are straight forward! My conscience would not allow me to hold anything back, and I would never give false information to save an animal, because it would only result in it being returned. You will never find vicious/dangerous animals on my listings! Usually, little or none is known about these dogs' medical history. We do know that a majority of them were abandoned by military, which means they are most likely up-to-date on their shots, heartworm negative, and generally healthy; however, we cannot guarantee that, which is why each dog must receive prompt veterinary care after adoption/rescue takes place.

Spaying or neutering by 6 months of age is a MUST!!! Unless the dogs go to a rescue or out of state adopters must purchase a spay/neuter voucher from us. You can get more detailed information and pricing by visiting SNAC (Spay/Neuter Alliance Clinic) at info@snac1.com or by calling 843-645-2500.

Your help with adopting, rescuing, or fostering these dogs is immensely appreciated, as is your help with cross posting to others who may be able to help save a life.

MORE PICS OF ALL DOGS ARE AVAILABLE!
