VALENTINE SPECIAL ON NEUTERING AND SPAYING!
Use the buttons below for your special Valentine's Day Gift from the Shelby County Humane Society... just $60 for dogs or $30 for cats, spay or neuter.
DOGS

CATS

Please come see us and adopt your new best friend today! The Shelby County Humane Society is a non-profit, no-kill shelber located in Shelbyville, Kentucky. "No-kill" means animals stay with us or in foster homes until they are adopted. No animal is euthanized unless it is medically necessary. Our work includes rescue of homeles animals, pet adoptions, a spay/neuter program and humane education. It is our goal to provide these services to the best of our ability in the hope that we can significantly reduce the number of unwanted and homeless animals in our community, as well as educating the public about responsible pet ownership. We gratefully accept donations and any volunteer time you have to offer.
Every time you search the web, use the button below and they will make a donation to our organization to help us help the animals. How nice is that?

The Shelby County Humane Society is a group of people who love animals. We are a society because we share these common beliefs:
We believe it is morally wrong to kill companion animals just because there are "too many of them".
We believe that it is part of the responsibility of all human beings to be kind and take care of animals. Consequently, if there are more animals than homes, we have a responsibility to control the population by spaying and neutering these animals so they do not continue to multiply.
We believe that it is reasonable to require by law that people take care of their animals, which includes providing proper housing, veterinary care and having them spayed and neutered unless they are excellent specimens of their breed and being bred with the intention of improving their breed.
We believe that the humane way to handle feral cats is to trap them in live traps, spay/neuter and vaccinate them to be returned to an area where someone has agreed to feed and watch over the group.
Our vision is to build a facility that will provide a safe haven for lost, abandoned and displaced animals. We hope that it will be a place where all animal lovers can come to see the animals in a cageless environment which is centered on the physical and emotional needs of the animals and the people who love them.
If your pet is LOST, please call us AND the Shelby County Animal Shelter ( 502-633-0009 ) as soon as possible! State law requires our county shelter to hold dogs for five days before overcrowding forces them to be euthanized.
Why spay or neuter your pet? Spaying or neutering your pet can prevent or decrease the possibility of prostate disease, breast and other types of cancers and other health related, life shortening dilemmas. It also saves lives by preventing unwanted litters that might otherwise end up abandoned and neglected. This is one of the most important things you can do to stop the unnecessary killing of companion animals.
Why should your pet be microchipped? Making sure that your pet is microchipped offers you the best chance of recovering them if they become lost or if a disaster (such as Hurricane Katrina) strikes. The microchip is a form of automatic ID technology that allows your pet's personal information to be logged into a database complete with contact information, which allows you to be reunited with your pet in a timely fashion.
To find out more about spaying, neutering, vaccinations or microchipping your pet, please visit our Clinic page! "

January 28, 2009 former THERAPY DOG (Therapy Dogs International) Needs Help

Post subject: Therapy Dog-Great Dane thrown from car in Crash-Doxie too

HUMAN IS TRAGICALLY KILLED IN HORRIBLE CAR ACCIDENT SUNDAY NIGHT!

BEAUTIFUL, GENTLE GREAT DANE THERAPY DOG EJECTED FROM CAR - HURDLED INTO WIRE FENCING!!

BROKEN HIP SOCKET- SMASHED PELVIS!! OVER 100 SUTURES! PIX BELOW

DONATIONS DESPERATELY NEEDED SO HE WILL BE ABLE TO WALK AGAIN!!

PLEASE READ and CROSS POST!!

This special dog is a former THERAPY DOG (Therapy Dogs International) and now, he is not only suffering the loss of his human Mom- his body is broken and mangled. He is in desperate need of major surgery if he is to walk again.

If we can all kick in- perhaps we can get this Horace the surgery he needs to walk again!!

Here is the story as reported by the vet tech at the hospital where Horace is now being cared for......

Sunday night the dogs owner was on her way from Jackson, Ms area to Memphis to be with her daughter who was scheduled to have a c section on Monday. On the way, there was a single car accident and the car roles five times. Inside is a Great Dane and a Dachshund. Tragically, the owner was killed, the Dane was thrown from the car into wire fencing from our best guess. The Dachshund, who was terrified, runs. The police find the Dachshund the next day when she returns to the area of the accident. The dogs are taken to a local vet and minimal care was given to get them through the night..

Peggy, the Dachshund has no injuries, just terrified. The daughter of the the dogs now deceased owner is friends with our doctors daughter in law, and they transported them to us. We spent hours pulling debris from the wounds, suturing and putting in drains.. Ligaments in the leg are ripped and the pelvis is fractured. Horace has well over 100 sutures. He also has a broken area in the socket where the head of the femur rests. He can not walk on the leg and though we were able to put it back in socket, it won't stay. When it is out of socket it pushes on a nerve which causes him to not hold the foot correctly and he is unable to correct it, so it drags.

His pain and wounds are being managed but this precious, 9 year old boy needs very expensive surgery if he is ever going to walk again!! This procedure will cost about $5000 and we are asking for donations from anybody who can help! NO AMOUNT IS TOO SMALL! .

It's so sad. These two dogs love each other and can not be separated, they are adorable together and are true mates.
THEY ARE BEST FRIENDS!!
Little Peggy just sits by her best friend all day long. She will not leave his side!! Please help HORACE walk again!

January 26, 2009 "Kane does well with my children who are 3 and 5 years old." Her son is allergic to him. Kane Needs New Home or Rescue. WV

"Kane came to my home 12/26/08. He was underweight and afraid. We decided to try to find his owner since he seemed to be someones pet. A month later, we have had no luck. My son is breaking out in hives when he pets the dog or the dog licks/rubs on him. This is our reason for trying to find him a home instead.

He seems to be young as he is still busy and likes to chew things. He collects sticks outside and loves bones and balls inside. He weighs about 55 to 60 pounds.

Kane seems to be potty trained. He comes inside often throughout the day and sleeps in the garage without incident. He knew sit when he came here. He will now shake, lay down (if you say down and touch floor). He can fetch a ball but is still working on dropping it when you ask He doesnt like a leash but is not fighting it now. I can walk him for a few minutes inside. (Its been too cold here to do much outside walking) He does like to try to pull the leash with his teeth.

He like to bark and chase my cats but doesnt try to eat them lol. They will hide under a table and he circles it barking and wagging his tail. They do get him excited. I have not had him around other dogs but we do have them loose in our neighborhood and he has been inside our fence with a female beagle on the other side. He showed playful barks, tail wagging, and hopping. I cannot say he is good with dogs but he wasn't aggressive at all. I like to think he wants a friend

Kane does well with my children who are 3 and 5 years old. He will let them pet him and play ball, and jump around. He doesnt mind them at all. Occasionally he like to lay on top of them on the couch. I have only heard him bark at my daughter once. She had jumped on him (with little skates on) while he slept in the floor. I feel this was my daughters fault and she has since been taught never to jump on the puppy. Ever. He will sit for them if they tell him and listens to their other instructions about 40 percent of the time.

He does have the "unaltered male" syndrome on ocassion. He isnt obessive about it but he does occasionally do it. Usually he tries this on people visiting the home....just to see if he can get away with it.

All in all I personally think Kane has the potential to be an awesome pet and companion. He loves being with us and does well with the whole family here. I do not know his previous family or history and am not a dog behavior expert by any means but I feel good with him in my home and he has adjusted well here.

I am located in Milton, WV. My contact email is nightdaisy03@yahoo.com I am willing to work with an interested party in getting him where he needs to go. I may also help with vetting.
I do not know if he is a Lab or a Lab mix. I am not that good at telling mixes from purebred if they are similar.....sorry"

January 24 , 2009 Michigan Animals taken from Shelters Sold To Research & Who Decides To Continue This Animal Cruelty

What has happened to human beings that they can inflict this kind of cruelty on helpless animals? I argue that treating those who can't speak or who are weaker than you in a cruel manner for any kind of gain is immoral and criminal. This is what happens in society whether it is animals, children, the elderly, the less educated. The only way to stop these "criminals" even though the law allows it is to expose what they are doing and support groups who want to change the laws Imagine you bring your dog to a shelter. The dog is given to an animal researcher who breaks its legs, infects it with an aids virus. This was your pet. This is a feeling animal who can get depressed and frightened. I ask again what has happened to the human heart? There is no rational reason for these kind of cruelty. NONE. Does the dog cry, whimper, stick its tail between its legs? Does it howl? What would the cat or dog tell its torturer? Barack Obama said this country does not torture war criminals. We have ideals to live up to. I guess animal abuse of United States Pets is allowed in all its varied disguises because breaking legs and inflicting pain on helpless animals who just happened to be dumped at one of the disgusting shelters who let the animals be given to research because the researchers can kill the animals and dispose of their bodies in a more cost effective way is just hunky dory with people.

"What Types of Research Use Companion Animals?

Class B Dealers sell dogs and cats to a variety of research institutions, including hospitals, private companies that manufacturer medical devices, and universities. Generally, these animals are used in short term research projects. For example, cats taken from a shelter in Tennessee were used in research on AIDS and methamphetamine addiction. Basically, cats were injected with the feline equivalent of HIV and then fed methamphetamine so researchers could see what the brain of a meth addict with AIDS looked like. Greyhounds, fraudulently taken by a Class B Dealer and sold to a private corporation, were used in heart research. They spent hours on treadmills after mechanical devices were implanted in their chests.

Dog labs are run by teaching veterinary universities, although they are becoming less common. Companion animals are used to teach surgical techniques to veterinary students. Sometimes the dog is purposely injured so the students can watch the techniques to repair the injury. Most dog labs kill the dog at the end of the school year or during surgery. Proponents of dog labs claim that this is the best method to teach surgery to veterinary students. Opponents question why animals are harmed and killed in order to teach students who are supposed to be compassionate professionals. Also, computer models and assisting in surgeries provide adequate learning opportunities for students without purposefully harming or killing animals. "

PLEASE HELP!! Eviction Dog and Tank NEED Loving Homes
(Update: Faith has been adopted)
If Jock and Faith could find a place together that would be great!
Faith was very dependant/bonded to Jock when they were first taken from the owner.

More info and Pics listed here www.ohiopoundpals. com Any donations are tax deductible

Along with Faith this is Jock who is an 8-9yr old Shepherd/Labrador mix that was a victim of owner surrender due to eviction. He was not surrendered to the pound at the time of his siblings, however, was living in a van with the owner. Now the owner has no place to go and he is being kenneled until we find a permanent home or foster for him. We don't know alot about his history, but he is very very sweet and gentle. He is great with cats and other dogs. He is neutered shots are UTD. He needs a sponsor ASAP. Please help him get out of the kennel!!! He will be worth it. He is such a loveable laid back guy that wants a permanent home. After a good grooming he will be just as beautfiul as ever. He was just started on Frontline. For some reason he has just lost alot of weight and we feel that it is from depression since he has been kenneled for 3 months without any interest in him. For more information you can call Tracy (330)
418-9744 or email tracekram@neo. rr.com. neo. rr.com He is located in Canton, Ohio.
Thank You!

ADOPTED!!!! Along with Jock this is Faith who is a 2-3yr old Shepherd/Laborador mix that was a victim of owner surrender due to eviction. She was not surrendered to the pound at the time of her siblings, however, was living in a van with the owner. Now the owner has no place to go and she is being kenneled until we find a permanent home or foster for her. We don't know alot about her history, but she is very very sweet and gentle. She is spayed. Faith is an awesome gentle girl. She loves people, dogs, and cats. She was abused and is kinda needy for attention. She needs trust in her life so she can quit being scared and enjoy fun things. All she needs is a big hug and someone to love her. She has come a long way with shyness since she was taken out of her environment. Faith loves to cuddle on your lap and give big hugs. She is such an obedient sweet dog. She is UTD on shots and started on Frontline. She does need a
sponsor ASAP. Also, if we can find a foster we will be able to get her spayed. We don't want to send her back to the dirty kennel after surgery. Please help Faith get out of the kennel!!! She is going to make someone a great pet!! She has already been kenneled for 3 months as Jock. These pictures do her no justice. Her warming personality makes her so beautiful.
For more information you can call Tracy (330) 418-9744 or email tracekram@neo. rr.com. neo. rr.com She is located in Canton, Ohio.

This is Tank a ? Chow mix apprx 3-5yrs old. He is neutered. He was emergently pulled out of the pound at the last minute before being gassed. He is a very nice boy that wants a home soooo bad. He is UTD on his shots and started on Frontline. He looks big in the pictures but he is very short. He walks well on the leash and is very well mannered. Loves to have his head rubbed. We don't know anything about his history, but when he is getting exercise at the kennel he doesn't pay attention to the other dogs at all. He is very curious though with cats so I wouldn't recommend housing with them. He is being boarded at a kennel right now so he would like to get out of there ASAP! He has been boarded for 2 months and he hates going back in his kennel after a walk. The boarding facility is closing for the season and it's getting cold out. For more information you can call Tracy (330) 418-9744 or email tracekram@neo. rr.com. neo.

January 20, 2009 Given to Research by Montcalm MI Shelter :(

These are the dogs who were taken from the shelter for research. Doesn't this make you sick? The future of these dogs is not good. They will be used for who knows what kind of research and then killed. There are no word to describe the immorality of using shelter animals in research. I hope they bite the people who took them. Better still I hope someone buys them back from the research company if that is possible. Man's inhumanity to people and animals continues. These dogs were highly adoptable.

Hi, I'm Ellie Mae, and to look at me you would think that I'm a typical coonhound. That's just not true, according to all the people at the shelter I'm extra special! I love to play, and LOVE people. This is my second time at the shelter. I had a great family once, but they brought me back. I can't help but to follow my nose, and just didn't understand what a wireless fence was for. They were afraid I would get hurt cause our house was close to the road. So here I am again. ***Everyone here says that my future is uncertain because it takes someone very special to adopt a coonhound. They're not sure how long they'll have the space for me to stay.*** I don't like it here. There's no place to run & play, and they just don't have enough time to play with me. I need a home with lots of room or a tall fence so I know where I'm suppose to stay. I need a family to love me forever, and soon!

January 17, 2009"Montcalm County is one of only 4 counties that permits a class B animal dealer to take animals from our shelter at no cost"

Billy is a dog that can be given to R & R research. Please help the people who are trying to save him. How could anyone use this sweet boy, hurt him and then kill him in the name of science!

"AS R&R CAME IN LAST WEEK AND DID TAKE 3 LABS (YES 3 LABS, SHELBY, BARNEY, AND TROOPER) SO WE NEED TO ACT FAST AND GET THESE GUYS OUT ON TUESDAY BEFORE THEY GO TOO! WE NEED DONATIONS FOR SAMSON, HOSS, BILLY, COMET, AND WANDA (SHE IS NOT AVAIL UNTIL 20TH)…ALL LABS (X)

http://search.petfinder.com/shelterSearch/shelterSearch.cgi?shelterid=MI669

This is Wanda . She is a little shy but warms up to you very quickly. She is very sweet natured and seems to have a good temperament. She will be available for adoption on Jan. 20Th!

Comet is a very cheery Little boy. He is about 1 year old and very playful. He has a good personality and is in need of a loving home. Adopt him today!

This is Billy. He is a very nice big guy. He is an older adult but very sweet. He came in as a stray and is now available for adoption. Adopt him today!!

This is Hoss. He was surrendered to the shelter by his owners and he is very sweet. While i was taking his pictures he decided to jump right over the wall to see me!! He is about 3 years old but he is still very playful. He is a high energy breed so he needs a lot of exercise. Adopt him today!!

This is Samson. He was also surrendered to the shelter by his owners. He is about 3 years old and in need of a good home. He is housebroke and neutered. His adoption fee is $20.00 and a license deposit of $10.00 if you live within Montcalm County. Adopt him today!

This is Hercules. He is a very playful and very sweet young boy. He looks very vicious but is actually kind of a big baby. He does like to tug at toys and because he is so big and strong we do not reccomend he be adopted to a family with other dogs or children. He will be available for adoption on Jan.16Th! HE WILL BE PULLED MONDAY BUT NEEDS RESCUE/FOSTER..PLEASE EMAIL ME!

This is Brandy. She is a very cheerful little puppy. She likes other dogs and loves children.; She will be available for adoption on Jan. 19Th! NEEDS ADOPTION/RESCUE

I REALIZE THIS IS A LOT TO ASK GUYS...BUT JUST LOOK AT WHAT WE HAVE DONE IN 2WKS TIME WE HAVE PULLED OVER 12 DOGS AND 3 CATS...AND WE CAN KEEP HELPING THEM GET OUT ALIVE AND NOT TO R&R UNTIL WE CAN HOPEFULLY HAVE A RESTFULL NIGHTS SLEEP ON 01/26/09 WHEN THEY DO NOT RENEW THE CONTRACT WITH THEM

We have 2 heartworm positive dogs in rescue & boarding right now that need treatment if you are able to donate for that as well. Dolly & Carson

If you wish to donate Directly to the rescues handling their care, please visit their websites…and just remember to put a note or memo on the donation that it is for Dolly, or Stanton dogs.

Montcalm County Shelter allows researchers to come into the shelter and pick dogs to torture in experiments. Some of the animals they take are pets. I am totally outraged as are many citizens of Michigan. If there is a hell there will be a special one for these people both those who allow dogs to be used in research and the class B dealers that take these dogs and the pets' previous owners who dropped them off at this hell hole.

A relative of mine was asked to work with beagles in research as he was a doctor and he could not stand it. He left. The beagles he was working with were used for eye experiments. They were made blind. However you do that to a healthy dog's eyes.

Many medical schools have stopped using animal models understanding it is cruel. Please read more about this awful shelter. I know I am over the top about this but honestly have you ever read about what is done to animals in research? My heartbreaks for the three labs that were just taken by the researchers from this shelter this week. The people of the area who love animals are not taking this cruelty sitting down.

I have no affiliation with the people trying to help these dogs from gassing and research. The comments here are mine. I read about this in a Michigan online newspaper and decided more people outside of Michigan need to see what is done to shelter animals at this shelter and I imagine others in the country. Can you imagine if homeless people were treated this way? In fact many people have been slaves to the greediness and inhumanity of people over the centuries. Shelter animals are experiencing death and cruelty by the same mentality that decided if you are voiceless you have no say in your destiny.

Check out sites on animal research. Read about dogs legs being broken, electrodes stuck in cats heads, researchers who do not give their victims pain pills and who kill them when the experiments are over. Sweet labs, placid dogs and cats are tortured in the name of many "crazy" science experiments.

Take a look at this place where animals used in research are loved and cared for when the scientists no longer need them.

From Dr. David Groobman / Founder

"The mission of the Kindness Ranch: American Sanctuary for Research Animals is to rescue and rehabilitate animals formerly used in research and to provide them with safe and secure homes for the rest of their lives."
