Tonight, after all that we did today to clean the shelter and care for the pets, I went back to the shelter to do night medications. It is something that is done everyday. It happens seven nights a week. There are only volunteers to clean the shelter. There are only a few in the area who care about what happens to the pets here. There are those who at our fundraisers or adoption events walk by and say “Leitchfield Animal Shelter, kill them all!”
After all the posting and transporting and treating and vetting and cleaning and walking and bleaching and feeding, it’s not enough. I felt a little ill physically at the end of my day. I sat down to try to calm my queasy stomach and I thought since I’m here someone should at least get something special out of the time.
JBird
http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=11320603
has been moved to a cage in the hall. She has been here more than a year and I hate for her to be stuck in a single cube when we get full. So she has a slightly larger crate in the hall. She has been here so long that often when you open her cage she doesn’t even come out. She just lays in it inviting you to pet her. Tonight I sat on the floor and she trilled, climed over her door and pulled herself right up into my lap. She was ecstatic. She kissed me. She rolled in my lap. She sharpened her claws on my jeans and buried her head in my underarm and curled her tail around her purring. She would not go away. When my phone rang and it was my family asking when I was coming home, she did not want to get up and I had to put her back in her cage.
For those that say, “at least they are cared for while they are with you” “at least they get medical care” “at least they are treated special” I say to you ‘it is not enough’.
JBird deserves so much more than just to be kept from death. She deserves more than to have help in healing her wounds. She deserves the love and attention she craves. As I sat in the floor and held her, Digby of the fabulous five was in the top cage crying and pressing his head against the bars and reaching out between the bars begging for someone to hold him too. Who would do that? There are no extra volunteers at night or any other time. There are enough to get the job of cleaning and feeding done. There is no one to hand out love.
I walked most of the dogs in the dark. The Rock hugged me and kissed me and begged me to stay in his run with him. I had to go. There were 40 more dogs waiting for that short time on leash when someone is petting them and that short romp in the field where they can run and stretch.

PLEASE, if you rescue, consider rescuing our pets. We do not have a kill date. When we are full, we have to euthanize. When we are not full, we do our best to love and care for each pet with all of our abilities.
Our shelter pets have had their wounds treated. Their treatable or manageable health conditions are addressed. They are spayed/neutered. They have been our charges for a long time. We can tell you about them. They have already been treated for whatever may have ailed them. What they will never have with us is a chance at finding that someone. Some, sadly, have spent much more of their lives here than they have ever spent anywhere else.
We are desperate for rescue. Our work force is too small for the number of pets we currently care for. Our shelter is full and when we look at these trusting faces we know the end is near for many of them. They are our friends.

JBird does not need much. Her only problem is a tiny patch of thin skin on her heel. Should she never get a home because she may play too much and that heel may bleed a little?

Our pets need adopters or rescue. Our area does not have adopters.
Please consider offering a safe place for any one of them today.

We're a VERY rescue-friendly shelter!

Reputable rescue groups are always welcome to help us save our animals. One of our volunteers recently described our current situation best when she said, "We can't continue to be low-kill if we're full. We're not asking rescues to take dogs or cats that have issues or need assistance getting over life in the shelter or that don't get along with other dogs, cats, and/or small children. We're asking them to take the no-big-problems dogs or cats, while we continue to try to find the right home for the others."

If you can help rescue even one of the Grayson dogs or cats, please contact us ASAP either via email at dwhite@aggressiveonline.net or via telephone at 270-230-8839. Rescues that are new to working with us would need to submit a list of their vet references, rescue references, an outline of their adoption policies, and reason(s) why they would ever euthanize a pet.

Rescuing from this shelter is a great deal on many levels. TRANSPORT IS USUALLY AVAILABLE (often to Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and sometimes even Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont) -- PLEASE JUST ASK!!!

Dear Governor Manchin,

In your state, a puppy mill called Whispering Oaks Kennel was busted
recently. This was one of the largest busts ever of this kind, and it has required
a national rescue effort to deal with the problem.

Whispering Oaks Kennel was forcing nearly 1000 dogs to live in squalor, and
was also potentially contaminating the water supply with fecal matter.
Unfortunately, because of _the loose regulation in West Virginia, there could be
countless similar puppy mills operating in your state.

This needs to stop! We ask that you follow the lead of other states and
change the laws in West Virginia to limit and regulate the scope of these
operations. Doing so would protect the people of your state and ensure humane
standards of care for man's best friend.

Jack

Jack he is a very friendly and playful guy. He has done well at the shelter with other dogs and even the cats! He is about 2 years old and weights about 10 lbs. Can you help Jonesie find a loving forever home of his own?

Jack has had 2 rounds of DHLPP and Bordatella, he will need to be neutered and receive a rabies vaccine and health cert before he can be transported.

He is in a VERY temporary foster home right now and is doing very well, she has several dogs both big and small and cats, and while he does like to chase the cats he doesn't seem to try and harm them.

Please if you can help Jack!

5 Starved Abandoned Beagles One's Throat WAS CUT. OHIO

i Susan
Would you know of anyone that could help with 5 abandoned beagles?
They were left behind at a trailer 3 months ago. I found out about them only 1 month ago. Luckily some neighbors would occasionally throw food to them. By the time I heard about them, they were literally just walking skeletons.
I've been trying to get placement for them but now I'm desperate.
I went to the property where they were abandoned yesterday (as I do everyday). First I found the water hose (that a neighbor had kindly ran from his house to the property) cut in several places. Then I found one of the beagles with his throat cut almost 3/4 the way around. It wasn't deep enough to kill him and We were able to get the bleeding stopped, It's just obviously painful for him. I've got him and one other here now but the other three are still at the trailer. I don't have room for anymore. I was already way past maximum capacity before the 2 came. I've contacted everyone I know. As bad as I hated to I even contacted our heartless dog warden 3 times and cant get him to do ANYTHING!
If you know of anyone that could help, Please let them know of the situation and ask them to contact me ASAP.
Thanks so much

Become a Grayson Angel This Rural Kentucky Shelter Staffed by 6 Part Time Volunteers Needs You

*** PLEASE FORWARD AND CROSS-POST ***

Many people think of a Humane Society as a well-staffed and well-funded group of kind-hearted souls that work tirelessly to save the animals in their care. Although dedicated above and beyond a level that gives new meaning to the word, the Grayson County Humane Society is literally comprised of ONLY SIX PART-TIME ONSITE VOLUNTEERS that tend to the 130+ animals that are now located at the Leitchfield Animal Shelter in Kentucky.

As the Grayson County Humane Society receives NO city, county, or state funding, the volunteers dig VERY deep into their own pockets and then they must rely heavily on the generosity and support of outside supporters.
As expected - fundraising and grant writing - while necessary - is a HUGE chore that often gets lost in the other needs of the day that tug the volunteers' attention elsewhere....a kitten brought in with a bulging eye, a mangy pup that's in such bad shape they can't tell what breed it is, residents wanting to turn in their senior dog only to be able to adopt a "newer model" for their pleading children.

Operating a shelter in a poor rural area with little local support is "mind-

bogglingly" expensive. The current annual cost to run the Leitchfield Animal Shelter is approximately $48,000 -- that's $4,000 per month to house, feed, and to provide the best veterinary care they can to ensure that each animal goes to its forever home or safe rescue as healthy and as loved as possible. That amount DOESN'T include the additional money that the volunteers also put towards their many life-saving transports, shuttling pets to vets, and purchasing extra supplies such as supplements and over-the-counter type items. Preventative medicines, as needed as they are, add an additional $1,000 per month, which would give an annual budgetary need of $60,000.

As small as the onsite volunteer base is, the Grayson County Humane Society has numerous friends and supporters that applaud and appreciate the huge efforts that "Bcoo" (as she's so fondly known on the Petfinder Forum) and the other onsite volunteers put in to find forever homes for the many beautiful cats and dogs (and occasional rabbit, hamster, chicken - you name it!) that come under their care at the shelter. In an unprecedented effort for this AMAZING group of volunteers, we "offsite" volunteers and supporters have joined together to form the "The Grayson Angels."

What is it that we're hoping to do? We as a group have committed to setting aside a mere one dollar each day for the Grayson animals. It doesn't sound like a lot of money, but if only 156 people do this (we already have nine committed angels), it will quickly add up to covering one year of their budgeted expenses. Perhaps even more importantly, it will give the over-worked and super-stressed volunteers some MUCH-NEEDED breathing room to finally be able to focus some of their limited energy on fundraising and grant writing for future needs and long-term projects.
Think of it as a granting them a "one year reprieve" to get their feet solidly on the ground to hopefully NEVER have to be stretched so thin ever again.

If you'd like to become a Grayson Angel, all it requires is setting aside one dollar a day and then sending in your first batch of "feathered funds" in mid-December to help with the year-end costs that are incurred at Grayson. Devise a system that works best for you - put a pretty envelope next to your computer and slip a dollar bill into it once a day, tuck seven bucks once a week into an empty coffee can hidden deep in your kitchen cupboard, or budget for writing a $91.25 check every three months. That's one of the beauties of becoming a Grayson Angel - you decide what works best for you to earn your furry wings. Skip the latte at Starbucks once a week or scrounge around under the couch cushions every few days.....your choice.

Please consider joining the growing flock of Grayson Angels. A mere four quarters a day from 165 people will keep the shelter operating for one more year. If this shelter was to close, the nearest other shelters are very high kill ones (compared to Grayson's lower kill rate - often only due to lack of space or behavioral issues).

While many shelters are often referred to as "the little engine that could," the

Grayson County Humane Society truly is the "little engine that DOES." They just keep chugging along as they climb what seems like a never-ending Kentucky mountain and they continue to work so very hard to find sanctuary for the critters in their care.

If you'd like to become a Grayson Angel, please send an email to Mare Horton at friendsofgraysoncohumanesoc-owner@yahoogroups.com (@yahoogroups.com) so she can add you to the growing list (and no - you don't have to join the Yahoo Group to become a Grayson Angel). We'll simply keep in touch with you via friendly reminders about where and when to send your donations (that information is also listed below for your convenience).

Please note that all donations to the Grayson County Humane Society are tax deductible. If you need a receipt, one will happily be provided to you. You can also follow the progress of the Grayson Angels by joining the Friends of Grayson County Humane Society Yahoo group ( http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/friendsofgraysoncohumanesoc/ ) or the MySpace page for the Grayson County Humane Society ( http://www.myspace.com/graysoncountyhumane ).

We look forward to welcoming you into our flock of earth angels. We think we're a pretty great group of feathered friends, but more importantly, we think the Grayson County Humane Society is a group that's EXCEPTIONALLY deserving of our time, energy, attention, and of course - our daily dose of $1.00.

Please join us if you can. The Grayson County animals absolutely ADORE angels, especially as they're surrounded by them every day - the ones that have "taken the form" of the onsite volunteers.

Thank you so very much........from one angel to another.......{HUGS}

No Kill Conference- Washington D.C. 2009

"The No Kill Advocacy Center is teaming up with the Animal Law program at George Washington University Law School to bring together the nation’s most successful shelter directors and the nation’s top animal lawyers. They will help you create a No Kill community and teach you how to use the legal system to save the lives of animals.

Learn from animal control/shelter directors who are now saving over 90% of all animals using the building blocks to No Kill success—programs and services that have had results in both urban and rural communities—to increase adoptions, reduce length of stay, increase redemption rates, rehabilitate animals, and much, much more.

Learn from animal law experts who have challenged our legal system to help animals: Whether it’s drafting model laws, fighting breed specific legislation, eliminating the gas chamber, filing impact legislation, or protecting condemned dogs, learn how to use the legal system to save the lives of animals.

Learn from activists fighting entrenched and regressive shelters in their own community as they show you how to launch successful campaigns for reform.'

Black Dogs on the Radio- Listen - Animal Wise Radio

Dear Friends,

Black dogs on the radio? It's true! On Sunday I had the opportunity to
be interviewed about our work on behalf of black shelter dogs on
the nationally syndicated radio program, Animal Wise Radio.
Judging by the number of website hits we've received since
yesterday, we had a lot of listeners who care about the plight of
black shelter dogs as much as we do.

You can listen to the interview on your computer online anytime by
going to: http://www.animalwiseradio.com/ . My interview is 20
minutes into the program. Just click on the Listen to the program"

"Poor Katie just did not know what to think when her family decided to become farmers. Chickens and goat...... what are these. She could not help but to be curious. Unfortunately, her curiosity landed her at the shelter. This girl was part of the family before the livestock but I guess she was out numbered. She is very well behaved and needs a home that will truly love her. She loves to play and wants to have a family where she will know the meaning of forever.

Anyone interested in adopting or rescuing an animal from our shelter should contact the shelter either by phone at 502-633-0009, e-mail us at

We aggressively pursue solid adoptions and work with rescue groups, both purebred groups and generic. We do not charge a pull fee for reputable resuce groups. Receiving rescues but be responsible for all vetting and transport of the animal(s) being pulled. We are currently working with several non-profit groups to ensure the animals adopted are spayed/neutered before adoption. Think Before You Give Up on Your Dog * The Foreclosure Dog's Letter To His Person * Elaine Vigneault

Why should your dog or cat die because your home is foreclosed? Think about this before you drop your pet off at overcrowded shelters where most of the animals will be killed and many gassed. Doesn't your pet deserve more from you? Look in your pet's eyes and tell him or her you are sorry if they put him or her in a gas chamber and he or she dies a painful death. How could you do this? This animal trusted you and you cared for it. There is no excuse. If you have to find a new home for your pet do not pick the easy way out. Your love means nothing if you can be so cruel to your animal. You are responsible for any pain and suffering your pet experiences and if your pet is euthanized you are also responsible for their death. The truth hurts, doesn't it? So does dying in a shelter.
Elizabeth' rant

The Foreclosure Dog's Letter To His Person

Elaine Vigneault

I've modified a popular classic letter to suit the times:

You bought a house! You finally had a yard so you decided it was time for a dog. You chose me out of all the other dogs. As a puppy, I entertained you with my antics and I made you laugh. You called me your baby and carried me closely. Despite some chewed boxer shorts and a few broken mini-blinds, I became your best friend. Whenever I was “bad,” you’d shake your finger at me and ask “How could you?” but then you’d relent, and roll me over for a bellyrub.

My housebreaking took a little longer than expected, because you were terribly busy, but we worked on that together. I remember those nights of nuzzling you in bed and listening to your secret dreams. I remember running in your new, big backyard. I believed that life could not be any more perfect. We went for long walks and runs in the park, car rides, and BBQs. I took long naps in the backyard sun waiting for you to come home at the end of the day.

Gradually, you began spending more time at work to get paid for overtime. I waited for you patiently, comforted you through the bill-paying frustrations and the debt collector's calls. I never chided you about bad decisions, I never cared about your FICA score, and I never threatened to garnish your wages or repossess your car."
