Get Your Copy of The Shelter Dog

"Hero was having a perfect day, flying through the heavens with the other angel dogs. Perfect, that is, until he asked the Shelter Angel, who watches over all the animals that are up for adoption, if he could go back to earth and become a shelter dog. After all, he thought, what could be better than having a very special person choose you – out of all the other dogs – to come home and live with them?

As Hero is about to find out, things don’t always turn out the way you plan. Sometimes they turn out better!

Filled with beautiful illustrations, this simple book tells the story of an angel dog who comes back to earth to experience the joy of being adopted. He waits patiently in an animal shelter, hoping today will be the day his forever family finds him. But will anyone be able to see how extraordinary this old shelter dog, with the wobbly back leg, really is?

Come join Hero on his journey home.

This book is for those of you who believe that every dog is… indeed… part angel."

What A Sad Face! She Needs Out of Stark Pound in Canton Ohio

Kimmie Got Lucky. They Couldn't Kill Her at the Shelter Because .........

"This is a plea for funds for Kimmie. Can you please help us so she can get to the Florida Sanctuary at end of the week.
Please crosspost to all you know and email all you know
Kimmie thanks you!!

Hi my name is Kimmie. I am an older girl who caught a break in life when the shelter I was in freezer broke down and they could not euthanise me. So I got a break because then some very nice people took me out of there.
But now I need help. I am at a vets in SC trying to find my way to Florida to stay at the Sanctuary Animal Refuge. We need help getting me there and I guess you can see from my pictures that I have some pretty bad skin issues. The vet here thought I was not worth saving but everyone else does and I am thankful for that as I am not ready to die now.

University Animal Hospital will be checkign me out once I get to Florida. I have really bad arthritis in my hips and my walk is odd but I still am loveable. The vet here wants to run a lot of tests but they want me to be seen by a Dr. Eich in Florida who has helped many of the Sanctuary dogs. I really want to get there and feel better. Will you help me? Please

As you can see from the pictures, Kimmie has horrible skin infections. We don't know yet the specifics as she only got to the vet late on Thursday and we are waiting for test results to come back on the tests we had done. She came to the shelter already spayed, and is HW-, a big big plus when it comes to asking for donations for her care, and a big plus for this poor girl not to have to undergo the HW treatment. She does have arthritis in her hips.

Sanctuary Animal Refuge has agreed to take Kimmie on a transport on Friday and she will be kept there, treated, and either adopted when she gets well or loved there for the rest of her life.

The shelter felt this was a dog that didn't deserve a chance. The vet said she was sure Kimmie had to be HW+ and be unspayed. Well, the vet was thankfully wrong on both counts. And enough of us wanted her to have a chance at a loving life. All of the coincidences in the past week prove she should live - from the freezer breaking down to the vet being sure she was heartworm positive and unspayed and he was wrong to a sanctuary opening up a spot for her. Please do not let her die now when so many are trying to help her to live.

We need donations for her testing, boarding and care this week at the vet's office, a volunteer(s) to drive her from Greenville SC to meet the transport in Atlanta, and then donations for her care at the rescue/sanctuary.

Anything - a dollar, two - or more - to get Kimmie to where she needs to be will be so gratefully appreciated. Prayers are also needed for this brave girl who wants so much to live.

Kimmie was a throwaway dog once. We need to make sure this never happens to her again.

If you would like to donate for her care in South Carolina please call or send a check to:

Here is the estimate from the vet for Kimmie's stay from Friday, April 25, to Saturday, May 3rd:
Ms. Henry,

I have included 2 invoices…the first is for treatment that has been completed and credited to the account and the second is for recent treatment and that which will sustain until Saturday. The second invoice also includes a discount that Dr. Grist has offered. She is willing to take 10% off all services except the grooming which is roughly a $55.00 discount off the total bill.

Total cost: $550.75 (which includes the $55 discount)

Donations made: $250.00

Current balance (for charges through Sat): $300.75

Regarding Paypal…I believe that if someone wanted to send a donation through Paypal they could if they have a paypal account. They would just need to use the “Send Money” link and send it to specialorder@petcaremobile.com (this is the e-mail we have set-up with our Paypal account).

I hope I have answered all of your questions…feel free to call or e-mail if you need anything else.

This beautiful boy is Hawkeye, he is I believe a Malamute collie who showed up at a home about a week ago. The people who found him put up posters all over the neighborhood and contacted everyone in the area, but no one ever claimed him, so they called the shelter. He is a young boy, probably under a year old. Like all Huskies, he likes to have long conversations. He wants to be with people and is very friendly and playful. Hawkeye gets along well with all the dogs and puppies at the shelter, but shows a little too much interest in the cats. He will be a wonderful friend and companion for a family with children, but no cats! Come by the shelter for a visit with Hawkeye. He would love to play a game of fetch or tag.

Princess, Great Pyrenees Dumped At High Kill Shelter Ohio. Read Why

I know there are responsible pet owners. I know as much as I hate to say this there might be responsible breeders. Although with all the killing of animals in shelters and pounds, I find it hard to say anyone who breeds more cats and dogs is responsible. Okay, throw tomatoes at me. I don't care. There are already pure breeds in pounds and rescues. Princess is an example.
Here is an example or what I am talking about. This Great Pyrenees was dumped in this pound because she did not breed. Is that a reason to kill an animal? She has an extended headache. If the owner was a responsible person who valued dogs for more than the money he or she could get from selling them, they would have found an alternate situation for this dog. But who cares if the dog is killed? The dog did not serve this person's needs.
Princess is in temporary foster care. What a big beauty. Here is the contact information and website of the pound. The shelter could use donations of blankets and food and volunteers. Will the other dogs in the picture with Princess get out alive?

2008 Meeting To Stop Using Heartstick Without Sedation SC Attend If You Live In Area

It is a credit to the County Council to stop the improper euthanizations and seek ways to correct this problem from knowledgable people in the animal welfare community. Kudos to them. Please support the homeless animals at this shelter and the shelter by attending the meeting if you are in the area.

"A small rural shelter has been euthing by means of HEARTSTICK without sedation, which is against the law yet it has continued in the county.
One local volunteer, has made the County take notice! After filing a complaint with the County Administrator, The Cherokee County Council has suspended all euths pending an emergency council meeting scheduled for 3PM Thursday. They have asked that people in the animal welfare field attend to offer input on how they can comply with the law and make needed changes at the shelter. If you live in the area please plan to attend. The administration building is located at 210 N limestone Street in Gaffney, SC.
Please attend if possible – this is concerning the shelter's use of the heartstick to euthanize animals.
For now it looks as though the county is trying to improve so we ask that you DO NOT contact the county to complain, if they don't make progress on the issue after the meeting we will continue to fight and then start the phone calls.
You can reach Andrea at SavingGP-owner@ yahoogroups. com (yahoogroups. com) for more infomation."

Interview With No-Kill Activist Nathan J. Winograd From Itchmo

Some people and humane organizations say no-kill is the same as hoarding. They believe it is more humane to euthanize animals, even healthy adoptable ones, rather than have them live out their lives in cages, rescues, and other potentially understaffed organizations. Others vehemently disagree saying this philosophy promotes negativism and hopelessness for a problem where there is hope if only people changed their consciousness about animal sheltering and animals. The no-kill movement is a social movement. It is primarily about the animals and saving their lives, but it is also about us as individuals and a society. How do we want to live and what are our values?

Nathan J. Winograd is a controversial figure to many.
To me he is a very intelligent man and animal lover who has a lot to tell us about how we can begin to change the shelter system to stop the killing. All we need to do is listen to what he says and be open.

BTW. There are wonderful rescues that have cage free environments. They do not hoard. They have significant adoption rates. Cage free rescues and shelters are a topic for another post.

"A litter of puppies came in yesterday that are sick. We have IV fluids from the last round of sick pups. The shelter manager has them on that and Parvaid.

Can we send a plea for donations? The last round cost me 175$ for 3 pups so I think we need double that for the 6. I paid for the last round but can't pay for this one right now. Any help is greatly appreciated!"

"Husband is in the hospital. Hospital will not release him, and hospice will not come until the dogs are all gone. Wife can't afford euth fees so will have their neighbor shoot and backhoe the dogs MONDAY!!

Current status:

. 2 purebred Corgi's: tentatively going to St. Louis corgi rescue

The number of people who have turned their back on Smart Sweet Gentle Loyal Danny Boy is unreal.

10 yr old, One Eyed, Blind urgent dog!

The number of people who have turned their back on this dog is unreal. He was found on the side of the road, with no idea where he was, where to find food, or who to trust.
When the Animal Control office picked him up, his pads were worn & raw, he was dehydrated, skinny, and too exhausted to struggle anymore.

We named him Danny boy! He spent about 2 weeks recovering and gaining weight. The his personalty really came out! He has the best personality a dog could have! He is so smart & loyal! He LOVES attention.

Because the shelter is so full, we had to place him in a short term foster home! But this is only a very short time. We must find a place by NEXT tuesday! He is so urgent.
Danny Boy is housebroken, Crate trained, and gets along great with other dogs! He is in the foster home with someone who is legally blind! He is very gentle, and sweet!

Danny boy is a 10 yr old, Australian Cattle Dog. He is neutered and has all shots. He is missing one eye, and his other eye is totally blind. The foster mom said he "smells" his way around the house.

IF you can save him! PLEASE E-mail ME!

Will Sanctioned Cruelty Toward Homeless Animals Ever Stop?Heartstick also needs to be banned.

I interview writers: poets, fiction writers, and non-fiction writers. A few years ago I interviewed a poet in his late eighties. He said that the greatest thing that disturbed him and surprised him after all his years of life was the never ending new ways people found to be inhumane to each other. No one has to look far in today's world or in history to see man's inhumanity to man. And it doesn't end with man , it crosses species. Gas chambers for both people and animals show some of the worst inventiveness that human beings possess. If euthanasia of animals is a must in today's world ,then at least do it right. Do it in a way that causes the least amount of suffering. Don't do it like you work in a plant and each wagging tail, each cowering creature is an object to destroy with no thought of their well being. The fact that people see animals as objects reflects the general trend in our world of dehumanization of people and desensitization toward suffering. Many of us are on compassion/ empathy overload. The picture is not totally bleak. There are people who see what needs to be done to stop suffering and they advocate for people, animals, and the environment. The following post was on the Animal Law Coalition site. I feel it deserves our attention.

Some shelters that have stopped gassing have started using heartstick instead. This procedure is ONLY to be done on a fully anesthetized and immobilized animal. One shelter that has it's animals routinely posted by rescue groups has a vet that, on her first day killing this way, killed several CONSCIOUS dogs in the hallway in full view of a family with their young children. This shelter pays her a fee per animal, and she's made upwards of $1000/day if the rescues haven't been able to get the animals out.

Workers in another shelter report the shelter's management refusing to let them do the procedure properly (refusing to supply the needed sedation) and making them perform it on conscious animals.

Heartstick kills the pregnant mother, but not the unborn young. They suffocate slowly.

So, add heartstick to the list of killing methods that are not "euthanasia".

Please Google "heartstick" to get the full details. Basically, however, a large needle is inserted through the lungs into the animal's heart and a lethal injection administered. Imagine trying to do this on a 130 pound conscious Saint Bernard. Heck, try to imagine doing this on a 5 pound Chihuahau - neither is going to hold still for it. Can you blame them?

Animal Gas Chambers in Georgia, N.C., Illinois, and Virginia

Be informed.

Read about recent state laws concerning using gas chambers to kill shelter dogs and cats. There is also a post about the history of animal gas chambers. Gas chambers are inhumane. The Animal Law Coalition Site has many informative articles.

Puppy mill "I'm a changed woman," says Oprah. The famed talk show host, Oprah Winfrey, says she will never buy another dog, that she will only adopt dogs from shelters. This after Oprah produced a show about puppymills. The show aired on April 4.

With Bill Smith of Main Line Animal Rescue and Wayne Pacelle of Humane Society of the United States as guests, Oprah showed her audience film from an undercover investigation by Lisa Ling and Smith of several puppymills.

The film depicted puppy mill dogs living or existing in filthy deplorable conditions, almost all in crowded cages too small for them to move around much, if at all. The cages often had chicken wire for flooring. The dogs were covered in waste, matted and starving with open wounds and other injuries. The female dogs were in particularly poor condition, having been bred continuously since they were puppies. The dogs were desperate to get out of their cages.

Many could not even walk when they were removed from the cages. In many cases, they were unsocialized and afraid of people.

Lucy In Kentucky Non- Duck loving dog needs new home ASAP

"Lucy and her sister Opal were originally adopted from our shelter as puppies about 3 years ago. Their owner surrendered them to us after these sweet girls had an altercation with some of his ducks. Everyone knows how mean ducks are....:) These sweet girls need a home where they will be treated with respect."

I think Opal was adopted.

Post subject: Stanford, KY: 13 Face PTS TOMORROW 4/3!!

Stanford, KY - Lincoln County Animal Shelter
http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/KY238.html
Phone: DO NOT CALL THE SHELTER!!! Please use email below.
email: Shelter liaisons Jenise Smith at smithszoo62@yahoo.com (@yahoo.com) and Melissa at melissa4dogs@bellsouth.net (@bellsouth.com)

Notice was just given that PTS is scheduled for tomorrow, Friday, April 4th!!!
Unknown yet as to which ones, but in the greatest amount of danger is probably Wyatt Earp and Bambi's Faline. Dogs or cats that are spoken for prior to their scheduled PTS on Friday, April 4th, MUST be removed from the shelter BEFORE then or they are still at risk of being euthanized!

PLEASE FORWARD AND CROSS-POST!!!

Shelter volunteers continue to work VERY hard to develop a good relationship with the "new" Lincoln County Animal Shelter in Stanford, KY. With only two volunteers and the ever-present risk of animals being euthanized at any moment, they constantly need to spread the word about the precious dogs and cats that have sadly found their way to the shelter.

Listed below are descriptions and photos of the current 11 dogs and 2 cats that are in need of immediate rescue or adoption. These 13 unlucky furbabes include two dogs who were simply dumped by their "family" because "they were tired of feeding them" (sigh), a kitty with an injured paw, and several Terrier mixes (Cairn and Rat) - just to name a few. In the greatest amount of danger is probably Wyatt Earp and Bambi's Faline. ALL, however, deserve a second chance at a happy life.

If you see one that you or someone else you know might be able to help - even if it's to just sponsor their rescue or adoption fees (ANY amount is appreciated and often greatly enhances their chances of being saved) - please IMMEDIATELY contact both Jenise and Melissa, the shelter liaisons at smithszoo62@yahoo.com (@yahoo.com) and melissa4dogs@bellsouth.net (@bellsouth.com).

If you need any additional information about any of the dogs or cats or if you can offer assistance in ANY other way, please also contact Jenise and Melissa. Please include the name of the dog or cat in your email subject line.

It's CRITICAL that you do NOT call the shelter! Simply email the two volunteers listed above and they will respond to you as quickly as they can. The volunteers coordinate the rescues and adoptions at the shelter, as the sole shelter employee is are far too busy to handle such requests. The volunteers also do not want to do ANYTHING that might jeopardize their still-developing working relationship with the shelter.

As a reminder, there is no fee for an approved rescue group to pull any of the Lincoln county dogs or cats. To approve a rescue, Jenise just needs at least one vet reference with a telephone number, a brief statement about their spay/neuter policies, and a shelter reference with a contact person's name and telephone number. Once approved, the rescue can take the animals of their choice into their care either unvetted (and vet him/her once he/she arrives in rescue) or the Lincoln County vet gives very good discounts if the rescue chooses to have the vet work done before the dog or cat travels to their new destination.

Rescue vetting prices are listed below. Feel free to ask the shelter volunteers if you would like pricing info on anything that isn't listed, but please note that such additional expenses will most likely be at the "regular" vet's price without any discounts.
Dog spay: $60.00
Dog neuter: $50.00
Cat spay: $50.00
Cat neuter: $35.00
DHLP-P-Cor Vaccine: $10.00
Rabies Vaccine: $5.00
Bordetella Vaccine: $8.00
FELV/FVRCP Vaccine: $20.00
Heartworm test: $20.00
Parvovirus test: $20.00
FELV/FIV test: $28.00
Drontal Plus dewormer (depends on size): $4.00 - $16.00 dogs; $4.00 cats
Health certificate: $5.00

Dogs or cats that are spoken for prior to their scheduled PTS on Friday, April 4th, MUST be removed from the shelter BEFORE then or they are still at risk of being euthanized! Due to spring break filling the often-used boarding facility, boarding this week will need to be at the vet clinic and will require vetting as listed below. Since the shelter dogs will be boarding with the vet's clients animals, some new requirements have been set.

All dogs must be at least ~6 months of age and must have the following upon arrival for boarding. Payment will be the responsibility of the receiving rescue (prices as listed above for rescue vetting):
DHLP-P-Cor Vaccine
Rabies Vaccine
Bordetella Vaccine
Fecal test (to check for coccidia)
Deworming (if needed)
Flea/Tick treatment (they are in the process of getting prices)
Boarding Prices:
Cats: $8.50/day
Dogs 20# or less: $9.50/day
Dogs 21#-50#: $10.50/day
Dogs 51# and over: $11.50/day

Please also understand that, due to the fact that there are only two volunteers available - both of whom are already being stretched to their maximum limit to do what they can - rescues/adopters MUST coordinate their own transport. Pull help can possibly be arranged though.

Please also note that Jenise, one of the two Lincoln County volunteers, is actually on vacation with her family this week. She has limited computer access, BUT she IS checking in. That's why it's so important to also email Melissa as listed above.

Jenise is VERY concerned this week about Banjo-Kazooie (whom she describes as "a very nice dog"), Wyatt Earp, Bambi's Faline, and Teague. She also believes that Poppy and Finola are "adorable little scruffies that should be HIGHLY adoptable."

Whatever you can do to help the Lincoln County dogs and cats, please do it ASAP. Euthanasia WILL happen tomorrow, Friday, April 4th. We simply cannot stress that enough. Thank you.........

Achilles is a BEAUTIFUL black young male DSH/Bombay cat. Sadly, it appears that his back right leg/paw is injured, thus his ill-fated name. This boy needs some TLC and he needs it YESTERDAY! Can you help support this wobbly little kitty?

Diva Danielle is a young female DSH gray tabby cat. Already spayed, up-to-date on her vaccines, and described as a friendly girl, this queen bee wants to be the sole queen of her castle. A home with no other kitties would probably be best for this furry royalty.

Lady Elaine is a young female Rat Terrier/Feist mix. Dumped by a family filled with children and other dogs that she loved dearly, Lady Elaine now finds herself facing death simply because "the children were tired of feeding her." What a TERRIBLE way to treat such a lovely lady!!! Her buddy, Prince Tuesday (see below), faces the same sad ending unless someone comes to their rescue IMMEDIATELY.

http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=10542893
Prince Tuesday is a smiling young male Min Pin/Feist mix. Brought in by the same "family" (and I use that term VERY loosely) as Lady Elaine (see her sad "tail" above), Prince Tuesday might not live to see yet another Tuesday. Forsaken by those he once loved and trusted, he was put out like yesterday's trash just because "the children got tired of feeding him." Let's hope the children's parents don't get tired of feeding the children!!!

Wyatt Earp is a STUNNING young male Chinook/American Bulldog mix. The famous Western cowboy with the same name once lived in a town named Tombstone; let's hope that this furry boy doesn't soon end up UNDER a tombstone. Even though he has a face to die for, there's NO need for him to die at such an early age. Please help this precious little cowpoke!

Banjo-Kazooie, perhaps named after the animal-filled Nintendo game with the same "moniker," is a young male Labrador Retriever/Flat-Coated Retriever whose eyes can literally pierce your soul. Described by the shelter volunteers as "a big, fluffy, and friendly guy," they also know that he likely doesn't stand a chance of being rescued or adopted simply because of his color. Please don't let the light fade from this beautiful boy's eyes. Perhaps an interesting footnote, the Nintendo game Banjo-Kazooie was originally going to be called "Dream"....I'm guessing that this boy is doing a lot of dreaming right now - ones filled with lots of "what if's" and "if only's."
